The conductor on the northbound empty in the siding steps down in order to give a roll by to the southbound coal load that just knocked down the signal at the north end of Lorenzo.

South of Sydney, NE, where BNSF's Angora Sub crosses over UP's Overland Route, there is a bit of a climb up a hill with a nice sweeping curve. Here, a southbound coal load grinds up the hill around MP 79.

There is an interesting signal bridge located at the south end of Lorenzo on the BNSF Angora Sub. This northbound coal empty is taking the siding (hence the dim headlight) in order to meet a southbound coal load.

With an entire day free, I decided to get a little ways away from Denver for a few hours. This coal empty is making its way through downtown Peetz, CO! Peetz is just a few miles south of the Colorado/Nebraska border. This is BNSF's Angora Subdivision. This coal empty came up the Joint Line, then the Brush Sub. It is ultimately headed for the Powder River Basin in Wyoming.

The Angora Sub comes to an end at the north end of Sterling, CO. As the sign on the signal pole implies, this BNSF local is about to leave CTC limits and pull in to the yard at Sterling.

I really like this shot because you can clearly see the train racing the storm. There is a clearly-defined wall of snow falling and the train is in the middle of it! The train was moving faster than the storm and the train would reach us before the snow. Shortly after the train passed, the snow arrived and it was falling with a vengeance.

As the signs on the right side of the picture indicate, the BNSF local is crossing over from Nebraska to Colorado on the Angora Sub. Less than 30 miles left until reaching Sterling.

Just south of Sidney, BNSF's Sterling Local proceeds south on the Angora Sub. It has about 35 miles left to go on its journey, across the Nebraska-Colorado border and in to Sterling.

A rather short BNSF Sterling Local heads south at the south switch of Huntsman. The local dropped of a few cars for the Sidney and Lowe shortline at the north end of the siding, picked up one car, and is now headed back toward Sterling.

At the north end of Huntsman, BNSF picks up a covered hopper from the shortline railroad Sidney and Lowe. The railroad is only 12 miles long and has a pair of GP10s for power.

A few miles south of the tiny town of Padroni, CO, BNSF's Edgemont, SD to Denver, CO manifest is rolling toward Sterling. This spot had been bathed in sunlight until five minute before the train showed up (naturally). So, black and white seemed like the better choice for the shot.

I love the effect a 300mm telephoto lens creates when looking down the tracks over rolling landscape. Five miles off in the distance, BNSF's Edgemont, SD to Denver, CO manifest makes its way south toward Sterling.
