A pair of manned SD70ACes help shove on the back of this eastbound coal train as it leaves the Valley Sub behind and starts on the climb up the Angora Sub toward Alliance. The sole DPU on this train is an SD70MAC. A bit of a special catch these days as the majority of SD70MACs are currently in storage around BNSF's system.

Even though the plains are indeed quite flat, you might find it curious that this eastbound Z-Train has only two units. The reason being that, despite this train being loaded with containers (up front) and trailers (toward the back), it is actually almost entirely empty. Denver tends to be a net receiver of goods, so intermodal trains come to Denver loaded, but frequently end up leaving largely empty. That fact is reflected in the trains symbol. This is the ZDENCHI7-22. The "7" in the symbol indicates this train is an extension off another high priority train. If this was a loaded train, it would have the symbol ZDENCHI9-22. The "9" in the symbol (on Z-Trains) indicates the train 1st section, critical arrival. There are no higher-priority trains on the system than "Z9" trains. Still, the dispatcher will keep this "Z7" rolling over most other trains on the line.

My personal favorite shot of this rather crummy, overcast day! The DPU on this southbound BNSF coal load passes by the iconic "Welcome to Colorful Colorado" sign that you can find along all (or at least most) of the road border crossings into Colorado. This crossing is on CO-131 between Peetz, CO and Lorenzo, NE.

With an entire day free, I decided to get a little ways away from Denver for a few hours. This coal empty is making its way through downtown Peetz, CO! Peetz is just a few miles south of the Colorado/Nebraska border. This is BNSF's Angora Subdivision. This coal empty came up the Joint Line, then the Brush Sub. It is ultimately headed for the Powder River Basin in Wyoming.

I really like this shot because you can clearly see the train racing the storm. There is a clearly-defined wall of snow falling and the train is in the middle of it! The train was moving faster than the storm and the train would reach us before the snow. Shortly after the train passed, the snow arrived and it was falling with a vengeance.
