At the west end of Rocky, an eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver heads down the main toward little Ten Curve. The fifth unit is a Utah Railway MK50-3. These units time on Utah Railway have come to an end and they are being sent to the KYLE Railroad in eastern Colorado and western Kansas.

Hmmm...east meets west? An eastbound BNSF manifest offers up plenty of bell and whistle as it approaches a highrailer holding the siding at Rocky.

A typical eastbound Provo-Denver, led by a ES44DC, departs the east end of Rocky on a clear signal. "Typical" for the BNSF manifest on the Moffat translates to "lots of tank cars".

At the beginning of the 21st Century, the least Utah Railway had on their SD40s expired. In 2001, they received six MK5000Cs. These unique units were rebuilds by Morrison Knudsen. In 2003, their MK prime movers were replaced with EMD prime movers and they were redesignated as MK50-3s. At the end of 2016, Utah Railway lost their last coal contract and a century of coal hauling for the railroad came to an end. As a result, their MK50-3s are being sent to the KYLE railroad in eastern Colorado.

With BNSF's yard in Denver currently without an empty track, the Provo-Denver is being held at Tennyson Street on Main 1. When UP added a second main between C&S Jct and Arvada, they basically added another siding, when needed, west of Denver. Prior to the second main being added, this train would have been held in the siding at Leyden.

This westbound BNSF manifest has a clear shot the rest of the way in to the yard at Denver. It is currently running on clear signals at Irondale.

It sure is great that, in 2017, there is still a large number of Warbonnets that are really in very good condition, considering the age of their paint. BNSF 784 is one such example on this westbound manifest.

This SD40-2 has some interesting equipment added to its roof. It appears as though it may be related to the remote control capabilities of the unit. No doubt this unit will be used as a yard switcher either at 38th Street or Rennicks.

With an entire day free, I decided to get a little ways away from Denver for a few hours. This coal empty is making its way through downtown Peetz, CO! Peetz is just a few miles south of the Colorado/Nebraska border. This is BNSF's Angora Subdivision. This coal empty came up the Joint Line, then the Brush Sub. It is ultimately headed for the Powder River Basin in Wyoming.

There is an interesting signal bridge located at the south end of Lorenzo on the BNSF Angora Sub. This northbound coal empty is taking the siding (hence the dim headlight) in order to meet a southbound coal load.

South of Sydney, NE, where BNSF's Angora Sub crosses over UP's Overland Route, there is a bit of a climb up a hill with a nice sweeping curve. Here, a southbound coal load grinds up the hill around MP 79.

The conductor on the northbound empty in the siding steps down in order to give a roll by to the southbound coal load that just knocked down the signal at the north end of Lorenzo.

In between Peetz, CO and Lorenzo, NE, we find the Colorado/Nebraska state line on CO-131. We also find a southbound BNSF coal load about to cross said border into Colorado.

My personal favorite shot of this rather crummy, overcast day! The DPU on this southbound BNSF coal load passes by the iconic "Welcome to Colorful Colorado" sign that you can find along all (or at least most) of the road border crossings into Colorado. This crossing is on CO-131 between Peetz, CO and Lorenzo, NE.

This southbound coal load is pulling up a hill on the main at Buchanan, about 14 miles north of Sterling, CO. This is the last siding north of Sterling and the last CTC siding roughly 40 miles! The next CTC siding is New Hillrose on the Brush Sub.
