Most of the cars on the California Zephyr were owned by either Western Pacific, CB&Q, or the Rio Grande. However, there was one car that was owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad. That car was the Silver Rapids. It was a contribution by PRR for getting passengers directly through (without transfer) from New York City to points west on the Zephyr.

The Silver Solarium was once owned by the CB&Q and ran on the California Zephyr. After the end of the Zephyr, the car was used on Amtrak for some time before being sold to Cedar Rail Enterprises. The car can now be chartered as was the case here when it ran with three other cars through a Trains Unlimited Tour. The configuration of the car was the same as the Silver Sky, owned by the Rio Grande.

Earlier in the day, UP 3985 (4-6-6-4 steam engine) broke down in Ft Lupton, CO. In La Salle, three SD40-2s were added to the train for the trip to Cheyenne. Once in Cheyenne, Union Pacific added UP 6936, the only remaining active DDA40X, as the diesel help.

The day before its first summer run, the Ski Train gets a bath at DUT! Note that the car names were still on the plaques on the sides of the cars (e.g. "North Park" on Car 5).

Even though it is only eight years old, 3154 has already seen better days! Paint is starting to wear off on the long hood and on the fuel tank.

The three Rio Grande GP60's, delivered in May 1990, were delievered as the result of an insurance claim on two tunnel motors (5402 and 5408) that were wrecked on Tennessee Pass. The GP60s were delivered according to Espee [GP60] standards, thus they did not have any class lights or MARS lights.

The white stripe that runs along the side of 3154 was a part of an experiment to try to increase visibility of the unit from the side at grade crossing.

In 1998, the Ski Train had not yet acquired their F40PH's from Amtrak. Over this summer, they borrowed the Rio Grande GP60's (even though 3156 had been repainted to UP 5702 less than a month ago). Here, the Ski Train sits at Union Station preparing for a trip west tomorrow.
