Built over thirty years ago, this former Rock Island boxcar clearly shows its heritage beneath its rusty exterior! The boxcar is now owned by the shortline Kyle Railroad in eastern Colorado / western Kansas. Its original Rock Island number was 300778. The train is moving at restricted speed as its track warrant is joint with another train. The Roydale Local (LDJ03) is working further east near Havana street and it too is occupying the main track. The train is passing over a BNSF track that is now abandoned (at least, this far to the south). There is actually still railhead buried underneath all that dirt! Half the local (probably 40 cars) were sitting on the main track blocking through traffic while another 30 or so cars were being switched in industries. The lead unit, UP 1526, was SSW 7291 until August 5, 2005. I found that I actually have a shot of SSW 7291 taken on August 1, 2003 in Delta, CO on the Montrose Local!! Appeared to be in descent condition, all things considered. Couldn't really tell how recently it was last used. There was also no indicating if UP owned it or if is was privately owned. Here, the MLMDVX (Limon to Denver extra) has just passed Quebec street on the Limon Sub heading west toward Denver. 36th street would have the train hold at Steele Street until a place could be cleared for the train.
