A nice long double stack moves north on the main track in Boulder as (half) a Valmont empty sits in the siding at Boulder. The siding isn't long enough to accommodate the entire train. The remainder of the train is down on the storage track at Stazio. Upon receiving a crew, the train will be put back together and continue to Denver.

A northbound double stack passes north through Boulder at 30 MPH, meeting a Valmont coal train that sits in the siding. The coal train is empty and will be ready to head south toward Denver later in the day. For the time being, it is tied down in the siding with no crew on board.

This shot is somewhat deceiving in that it looks as though it could have been taken in the middle of nowhere. In fact, turning in either direction would reveal office buildings as we are right in the middle of Boulder! This northbound double stack is approaching the south end of the Boulder siding.

After being held briefly for the Longmont Turn to clear up at Valmont, this Seattle-bound double stack is on the move again in Boulder. The train has just crossed over the 55th Street grade crossing. The switch in the foreground is the south end of the Boulder siding.

There was a time when a quartet of SD40-2s could be found leading the highest priority trains on the railroad. In 2011, you can find them running on locals. But, then again, at least you can still find them in 2011!

The newest siding on the Front Range Sub is Longs Peak located a couple miles north of Longmont. Prior to the installation of this 7,700 foot siding, it was about 60 miles from Broomfield (9,000 feet) to the next siding longer than 4,000 feet. That siding is North Yard located in Fort Collins.

On this Friday afternoon, BNSF's daily Denver to Laurel manifest departs north from the main after meeting the Longmont Turn, approaching the south switch on the siding.

Due to floods in the midwest, the Front Range Sub has seen a fair amount of rerouted traffic this summer. Such was the case on this Thursday afternoon as an empty BNSF northbound enters the siding at Broomfield. The train is meeting a southbound...but the train won't fit west of Nickel Street, so the crossing will have to be cut.

I always enjoy running across the occasional "Retro Belle" SD70ACe. I'm really happy that Kansas City Southern has reintroduced this classic scheme as I find it to be one of the sharpest schemes on railroads today.

There has been massive flooding in the Omaha, NE area this summer. Consequently, BNSF has rerouted a lot of traffic through Colorado. As a part of the reroutes, several coal empties have run north on the Front Range Sub. Here, one waits for the dispatcher to allow the train to proceed into Broomfield for a meet.

A northbound rerouted coal empty sits on the the fill in Westminster. As it turns out, this trio of SD70ACes are actually the DPU units on the tail end of this train on a pleasant July afternoon.

The Longmont Switch back over none other than Coal Creek as it switches out some cars at the north end of the Lafayette branch.
