For a few months, the Valmont coal train loaded exclusively on BNSF in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. That has changed, however, as the train is now loading in western Colorado (on UP) once again. As a result, the power on the Front Range Sub is once again mixed between BNSF and UP as the Valmont train wraps around Church Ranch Lake.

With its journey nearly in the books, BNSF's daily HLAUDEN (Laurel, MT to Denver, CO) freight pulls across Pecos Street. In the next four to eight years, this scene is supposed to be quite different as RTD Light Rail (or Commuter Rail) should be visible at this location.

Pulling out of the siding at Broomfield, the northbound "Stinky Slinky" (which carries molten sulfur) is starting to pick up a little speed. The train is empty, headed for Bonneville, WY. Considering the high (backlit) summer sun, black and white seemed like a good choice for this shot!

After meeting the northbound "Stinky Slinky" (sulfur train), the southbound HLAUDEN starts to pull toward the south siding switch of Broomfield. An interesting note...the station sign of "Broomfield" has been removed and smaller signs have been added at either end of the siding that say "NSS Broomfield" and "SSS Broomfield" for "North Siding Switch" and "South Siding Switch", respectively.

A slightly different perspective of a southbound manifest approaching the north siding switch of Broomfield. At this time of year, the train was running directly into the sun! When you combine that along with the fact that the sun was nearly directly above the train, there wasn't really a sunny side of the train...

BNSF's daily Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest wraps around the curve leading under the bridge of US-36, which I was standing on for the shot. This is almost the exact spot where two Burlington Northern trains hit head-on in a collision in 1985.

After meeting two northbounds, this rather lengthy southbound HLAUDEN works on putting its train back together. The crew had to cut Nickel street so that traffic was not blocked while the train waited for the northbounds.

The weather was all over the place on this Spring day! There was a little bit of sunshine, a bit of wind, overcast skies, lightning, thunder...and a LOT of rain. BNSF's Denver, CO to Laurel, MT manifest pulls down the main at Broomfield where it will wait to meet its southbound counterpart. Dark lightning clouds hover ominously to the east.

The topography just south of Berthoud is a little bit interesting. There is a dip and a rise that the tracks must negotiate. In the distance, you can see the back part of the train coming down the "dip", while the front end of the train here is climbing up the "rise".

In Loveland, BNSF 4854 and BNSF 4863 work hard (along with a single ES44DC pushing on the back) to climb grade southbound. Note the "40" on the yellow sign alongside the unit, indicating a (maximum) speed change to 40 MPH.

Mason Street! Honest to goodness street running at its best. BNSF's daily Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest creeps down the center of Mason Street in downtown Ft Collins.

Sitting in the yard in Ft Collins is this pair of Great Western GP9's. They certainly have seen better days and could use a fresh coat of paint!

Rails for Laurel! This rail train was loaded at Rocky Mountain Steel Mills (formerly CF&I) in Pueblo. The train is now headed for Laurel, MT (and points beyond). The never-ending task of railroad maintenance.

A northbound BNSF rail train crosses over Pierce Street in Westminster. Later in the day, this train and crew is involved in a horrific accident when it struck a woman lying on the tracks, attempting (and succeeding) at committing suicide.

The ES44C4 (shown here) is something of joint venture between BNSF and GE. 25 units have been delivered to BNSF. They are A1A-A1A units, meaning the center axle on either truck is a dummy axle; it does not have a traction motor. The theory is that 4 AC traction motors provide roughly the same tractive effort (at track speed) as 6 DC traction motors. If the units pan out, BNSF plans to run them on intermodal trains on the Transcon to save on traction motor costs.
