Two ES44C4s lead BNSF's QTACDEN around the fill in Westminster. This is near the location of the derailment of the Longmont Local 10 months earlier when the train struck a deliberately-placed tree stump. The QTACDEN consists of unit auto racks on the first half of the train and double stack (COFC) cars on the second half of the train.

Not long before this shot, BNSF received 25 ES44C4s. Two of those units happened to appear on the QTACDEN, which came down the south end of the Front Range Sub in late afternoon light.

Just north of Broomfield, BNSF's QTACDEN (Tacoma, WA to Denver, CO) makes it way through the S-Curve at MP 17. The train is under the power of a pair of brand new ES44C4s.

Third out on BNSF's Laurel-Denver is this somewhat pink-looking Warbonnet SD75I. The SD75 is rated at 4,300 HP, which is 300 more than the SD70.

At the north end of Broomfield, a southbound BNSF Laurel-Denver has a warrant all the way into town. It is a very drizzly and cold afternoon ahead of a possible Spring blizzard.

After cutting away from their train, these GP60Ms are heading south down the siding at Broomfield. The will return north on the main and then back into the siding and attach to their train. That will allow them to return to Longmont.

This GP60M has quite a bit of patch work on it! Why? The unit number might sound familiar...this was one of the units on the northbound that derailed in June 2008 after hitting a tree stump in the tracks. Here is a shot of the unit sitting outside Homestead House after the derailment.

After switching several industries in Lafayette, the Longmont Switch returns toward Broomfield with seven cars in tow (and a caboose!).

In a rare daylight run, the Longmont Switch moves south down the Lafayette spur toward Broomfield. The engines will run around its train when it reaches Burns Junction. Longs Peak stands tall in the background.

With the rather dull lighting of the day, black and white seemed appropriate for this shot. But it also seemed a shame to lose the bright orange of the GP60M. So I decided to compromise! A line of cars headed south on US-287 wait at a red traffic signal while the Longmont Switch slowly makes its way through the "intersection".

BNSF's Longmont Switch typically runs on the Lafayette spur at night. But on this Tuesday, the local ran up the line in the day. Here, the train is heading back down the spur toward Broomfield.

The HLAUDEN makes its way down the center of Atwood Street in Longmont on an otherwise quiet Sunday evening. The power on the train is a quartet of Dash-9s running elephant style.

A great way to finish off the day was with this Denver, CO to Laurel, MT freight (HDENLAU) at Broomfield. I shot the train a few hours earlier preparing its train for departure from the yard. Here, the train has a track warrant all the way to Longs Peak, so it won't be making a stop anytime soon!

A few afternoon clouds spill over on the Continental Divide as the Valmont coal load works on spotting cars at the power plant in Boulder. Interestingly, the third unit on the train in a C44-9W, not a unit with AC traction motors! Not too common these days.
