When it is not out on the road, you can always count on finding Union Pacific's Colorado Springs switch sitting just north of the depot on the east side of the siding in the Spring. Here, a patch Cotton Belt GP40-2 and a freshly repainted Rio Grande caboose (01513) sit waiting for their next assignment.

An SD70ACe and an ES44AC work together as the tail end DPUs on this southbound coal load. The train is just coming into Palmer Lake (note the houses in the background), at which point the units will be able to throttle down and drop into dynamics.

This southbound is approaching the top of the Palmer Divide at Palmer Lake. I don't think much more needs to be said for this shot...

After stopping briefly in the sag to allow its traction motors to cool, this coal load has resumed its climb toward the top of the Palmer Divide, now less than two miles ahead of it.

Just south of Spruce, southbounds drop into what is known as "the sag". This is so named because trains briefly descend down a 1% grade. This is the former location of a crossover when Rio Grande and Santa Fe each had their own tracks. When the crossover were removed and the lines connected (to operate as the Joint Line), the southbound Santa Fe track descended down the embankment to connect with the Rio Grande track below.

The last DPU on a southbound coal load passes the grade crossing in Greenland. When looking to the southwest, you can get a nice shot of the DPU and the famous Pikes Peak in the same shot!

A really nice barn stands in Greenland. The barn seems to be something of a staple in Greenland as I have seen many shots over the years of the barn in the foreground and southbounds in the background. I figured it was time I add my own shot from the location!

This coal load is making about 15 MPH as it climbs the 1.4% grade on the north edge of Larkspur. As more and more GEVOs and ACes arrive on BNSF, the sight of an SD70MAC leading is becoming less and less common. Ten years ago, that is all would see on these trains.

After two significant snow storms in the past week, this particular Sunday was absolutely beautiful! Just north of Tomah Road, this southbound BNSF coal load is on the move under the care of an SD70MAC and an SD70ACe for power.

Just a couple miles north of Palmer Lake and we catch a meeting between a southbound manifest and a northbound coal empty. The manifest is headed for Kansas City while the coal empty is headed for the Antelope Mine in the Powder River Basin. The last spec of light from the day shines on the ES44ACs leading the coal empty.

Literally minutes before the sun set behind the mountains, this BNSF manifest is nearing the top of the hill on the Joint Line at Palmer Lake. The train is on Main 1...you can see Main 2 in the background.

A trio of SD70-series units (two SD70MACs and an SD70ACe) bring up the rear of this southbound coal load on the Joint Line (Main One) south of Castle Rock. The SD70MACs are DPU units controlled by the head end, while the SD70ACe is a manned unit that was added at Big Lift (just south of Denver). The extra unit will help push up to Palmer Lake, and then cut off and return to Big Lift.

Just south of Castle Rock along I-25 (which can just barely be seen to the right), this southbound BNSF coal load is working hard with a pair of SD70ACe's on the point.

Not quite Halloween yet, but that isn't stopping the white stuff from falling along I-25 just south of Castle Rock. A BNSF coal load makes good time up the 2% grade as it nears Tomah Road.
