After going through a slow order, UP 4014 is starting to accelerate a bit here in Grinnell, KS, and a bit of smoke is being kicked up as a result. A UP ballast cleaning crew sits at the east end of an agricultural siding.

SSRX is S&S Locomotive Leasing, a leasing company that seems to lease to a lot of agriculture businesses in the plains. Once such leased unit is this Pathway Ag SD40 in Grinnell, KS. Not too often you come across an SD40 (rather than an SD40-2) these days! Granted, it might be an SD40-2 internally, but the car body is still that of an SD40.

Most railroads painted a unit in red, white, and blue and renumbered it 1776 (and/or 2026) for the 250th Anniversary of the United States. Union Pacific, however, just applied an "American 250" patch to this freshly painted SD70M. I think they chose to do this to keep the consist of the special more uniform with UP Armour Yellow.

A UP special agent speaks with a member of the steam team as a maintenance stop continues here in Grainfield, KS. UP special agents are fully deputized police, with law enforcement abilities including (but not limited to) making arrests if necessary. Many railroads, including all the Class 1 railroads, have such special agents on the payroll.

Getting down low along the rails for a shot of UP 4014 during its maintenance stop in Grainfield. Two Union Pacific special agents (UP police) were on the scene to make sure people were staying safe. They were very polite and had not issue with people crossing the main to get pictures, etc on either side of the tracks. During this maintenance stop, a (diesel) fuel truck met the train to top off the fuel tank in UP 1776 (the SD70M joining the Big Boy on the journey).

The Kansas State Flag is flapping in the breeze on the front of UP 4014 during a scheduled maintenance stop. It is a scorcher of a day, with temperatures already 100ºF (38ºC) just before noon.

"Grainfield: Where Dreams Grow in Fields of Gold". Not a bad slogan for the rural farming community! Many people, no doubt include a lot of local farmers, have gathered to check out the massive 4-8-8-4 Big Boy that stopped in the tiny community for about 30 minutes.

So far as I know, nobody was actually riding on the bayside caboose on the back of the Big Boy special. I think it was present only for display purposes. But it makes for a great site here at the Grainfield sign!

The population of the small Kansas town of Grainfield, KS is 322, according to the most recent census. Looks like there is a good chance the population of the town at least doubled on this Sunday morning, as a lot of people flocked in to see the Big Boy up close and personal during its scheduled maintenance stop.

If there is one things Kansas (and the plains in general) have in abundance, it is grain elevators! UP's Big Boy is slowing to a stop in Grainfield, KS as it rolls by the Heinrich Feeds grain elevator.
