Not the best lighting, but I could not pass up an opportunity to grab a shot of the Rio Grande Heritage Unit! It is pretty hard to believe that this unit is nearly 20 years old! It was unveiled at North Yard in June 2006. The paint is a bit dirty and could certainly use some touch up. The unit is headed to North Platte, NE for engine work. Perhaps it'll end up getting a paint job before its 20th birthday next summer.

The clouds were kind of all over the place this morning, which was casting some crazy shadows and creating a lot of contrast. UP's MGJNY, led by a graffiti-ridden ES44AC, rolls into the OS at East Rocky.

After meeting a westbound coal empty (which is visible in the distance), UP's thrice-weekly MGJNY is ready to roll east out of Rocky toward North Yard in Denver. The train is quite short this morning, with only 30 cars or so (give or take).

Hello old friend! It's been just over two years since I last saw UP 1989, the Rio Grande heritage unit here in Colorado. This morning, it is the third unit on UP's MGJNY on the main at Rocky. Turns out the unit has been flagged as a bad order, and it is making its way toward North Platte, NE so it can be repaired.

UP's eastbound MGJNY is holding on the main at Rocky as a westbound coal empty rolls by in the siding. The coal train will run through the siding without stopping. A ballast regulator and a tamper are tied down on the Rocky Flat Industrial Lead.

Stacks of ties and gondolas of tie plates paint a picture of maintenance in the house track at Rocky. Some maintenance crews are on the end of the caboose (or "shoving platform"), getting ready to start the days work.

A UP work train is tied down in the house track at Rocky. A maintenance crew is discussing the plan for the day ahead. Two light units will come out of North Yard later to hook on to the train. Rumor has it that UP's maintenance project on the Moffat is going to stop nearly all trains between 6am and 6pm.

At the siding of Mesa, UP's Limon Local is headed east on the main track. The sun was just a few minutes away from poking out from behind the clouds, but it set up this interesting mix of light and dark! The training is approaching the east end of CTC on the Limon Sub. After passing by the east switch of Limon, the train enters track warrant territory.

The conductor for the Limon Local is closely watching the train as it rolls by on Main 1 eastbound. He is looking at the brakes on each car is rolls by to ensure all brakes have been released. After the train completely rolls by, the conductor will get a ride to the head end for the train to continue east onto the plains.

The Limon Local rolls by the signals at the control point CP K632 at Havana Street. The train is rolling by relatively slowly, as the conductor is examining the train to ensure the hand brakes have all been released.

The conductor has finally walked the train to make sure all the hand brakes are released. The engineer is now on the train alone, and the conductor is going to watch the train roll by to, again, ensure there are no sticking hand brakes for the journey east to Limon.

After spending two hours pulling cars out of the yard at Stapleton, the Limon Local is getting close to being ready to depart east. However, the conductor still has to walk the entire 84-car train to make sure all the hand brakes have been released.

I shot the Limon Local a week earlier, and the leader the crew was given was in much better shape than this AC4400CW! This particular unit is probably wearing the same paint as when it was delivered to Union Pacific in November 1995. An interesting note about this unit. It was actually ordered by Chicago North Western. But it was ready for delivery after the UP acquired the CNW, so it was delivered in UP colors.

The crew on UP 6873 brought the AC4400CW out of North Yard over to Stapleton here on the Limon Sub. The unit is sitting on Main 1, getting ready to enter the yard. You can see there are a lot of cars waiting. 84 cars in all, plus a GP40-2 and an SD40-2. The crew will have to triple over to build the train.

An SD70M leads this eastbound light power move toward a diverging clear signal (away from the camera) at Havana Street. The crew light power is going all the way to Kansas to pick up a grain train. It is the harvest season!
