A westbound UP engineering special rolls by a UP track maintainer at Eisele (Clay). The maintainer has his hyrail pickup in the siding, while he is out on foot to give a roll by to the special. The maintainer will follow the special out of Eisele to check on any potential defects the engineering special might find.

This is a great two-for-one shot! To the right, we have a westbound UP engineering (passenger) special on the main track at Eisele. To the left, we have the westbound Rocky Mountaineer, wrapping around Little Ten Curve, two blocks behind the engineering special!

Love or Hate Union Pacific, you have to admit that their passenger trains look better than just about any other (freight) railroad. Here, an engineering special crawls along at 10 MPH (after being flagged by the east signal) on the main track at Eisele (Clay). The train is, among other things, verifying the gauge of the rails and checking for defects.

UP 4533 and train have slowed to a stop at a red signal at the east switch of Eisele (Clay). DS-378 indicated there is a phantom occupancy on the main, and that the engineering special will need to be flagged by the red signal.

There have been quite a few UP passenger trains running in the Denver area this summer! In June, UP's passenger equipment ran west over the Moffat. In July, UP 4014 brought a train from Cheyenne to Denver. Then, UP 1616 did the same thing on the Greeley Sub. Later, passenger equipment went west over the Moffat. Now, a UP engineering special heads west, climbing the north leg of Big Ten Curve, with a single SD70M for power.

A single UP ES44AC heads west on the main at Rocky, meeting an eastbound BNSF oil train. The oil train just arrived and is going to tie down in the siding as there is no room in Denver for the train at the moment. The single UP unit has a green signal and is going to continue westbound by itself.

UP sent a single ES44AC west out of North Yard west on the Moffat. While I do not know why, I would imagine it was being sent to rescue a train that had an engine fail somewhere to the west.

This is a classic perspective of the tracks between (daylighted) Tunnel 28 and Tunnel 29. The red-ish rock just behind the last passenger car marks what is left of Tunnel 28. The reason for this passenger train was not known to any railfans. At least, no railfans I know. It was supposedly a deadhead move, although there was some speculation that perhaps it was related to the UP/NS merger announced on July 29th.

Just west of Tunnel 27, the evening light couldn't be better as a UP passenger train, deadheading west, nears the west end of the Tunnel District. This train is headed to Grand Junction this evening. UP 6045 was recently repainted in UP's newest scheme, sporting the classic shield on the nose and the flag on the sides of the nose.

This UP passenger train is just emerging from Tunnel 27 on its trip west through the Tunnel District. If you were to stand at either portal of Tunnel 27, you would not see any hint of light from the opposite portal as there is a 90° bend in the middle of the tunnel.

The shot of westbound climbing to Tunnel 1 is, ironically, better suited for morning shots than afternoon shots. That is because this is one spot where westbounds are essentially headed geographically east. Regardless, this UP passenger train still looks great as it approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1.

Quite a few local railfans received the news regarding this westbound UP passenger train. As expected, many of them (myself included) were gathered at Blue Mountain Drive for a couple of shots of the afternoon move.

This UP passenger train is supposedly deadheading westbound to Grand Junction this afternoon. It came south on the Greeley Sub yesterday morning, and stayed overnight at North Yard last night. There is speculation that the train might have something to do with the UP/NS merger, announced on July 29th. But that is entirely speculation.

UP 6045 is still slowly moving along, thanks to another (of many) slow orders that are encompassing the Moffat this summer. The train is winding through the S-Curves just east of the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive.

Summer afternoons in Colorado are very frequently overcast with thunderstorms moving through the area. Fortunately, mother nature had other plans this afternoon, as the skies are nearly completely clear, offering perfect light for this westbound UP passenger train. The train is headed for Grand Junction today.
