On December-Eve, a substantial storm moved into the area of the Palmer Divide and brought...well...the picture probably speaks for itself! A coal load works hard south of Castle Rock, pulling toward the top of the hill at Palmer Lake.

Traffic was SLOW moving on the roads during this blizzard! Slow enough that I was unable to reach the head end of this southbound manifest along the I-25 frontage road south of Castle Rock. I had to setup and settle for a shot of the H1 Dash-9 DPU on the tail end.

The north end of the Joint Line parallels I-25 for about a half a mile, roughly between Kalamath Street and 6th Avenue. Kalamath Street is a good place to capture trains heading south.

The two main tracks between the yards and South Denver tend to be run following a left-hand rule. Now this is CTC, so anything is possible, but more often then not, northbounds seem to run on Main One and southbounds on Main Two. Such is the case here on this snowy November day.

A southbound coal load rolls south on Main Two and a coal empty heads north on Main One. All the while, I stand at MP 2 in the lightly falling snow!

As I was passing Union Station, I happened to notice the good old "Vomit Bonnet" in the Lodo Siding on the tail end of a southbound coal load. For those not familiar with this unique paint scheme, it was a test scheme conceived of after the BNSF merger. If a slightly different decision had been made, this could have been the scheme applied to all new units (instead o the Heritage scheme)!

A southbound coal load, waiting for a fresh crew, is tied down on the Lodo Siding northwest of Union Station. All of the buildings in the background have been constructed over the past ten years.

Looking at this unit covered hopper train, it is not difficult to see how it got the nickname "earth worm". This grain train is headed south on Main 2.

A BNSF crew brought this local down to the Kountry Line. The switch to the Kountry Line is located off the Joint Line about 3 miles south of 20th Street. Here, the crew ties down the local and prepares to wait for a ride. The next day, a new crew will work the local on the branch.

This UP coal load is headed south toward the Joint Line on Main Two along the "Consolidated Main Line". If and when the FasTracks initiative is completed, Light Rail will actually run along these three track (where the dirt is seen here). Currently, Light Rail runs right up to the back of the station.

Ever had one of those situations when you are caught off guard and completely surprised by what you see! Such was the case for me when I saw a headlight on the horizon on Main One. I was heading north on the I-25 Frontage Road (just south of Castle Rock). Upon seeing the headlight, I pulled over to get some shots, expecting a coal train. Much to my surprise, there was only a single ES44AC headed south! Not even sure exactly where it was off to...

After meeting a parade of southbounds at Academy and Monument, this BNSF manifest is finally on Main Two and has a track warrant all the way to Littleton. While southbounds have to work hard to climb the 1.2% ruling grade, northbounds get to glide down the same grade into Denver. As a result, Main Two tends to move a bit faster then Main One!

Two miles north of Palmer Lake and this BNSF manifest has an approach (yellow) signal as it heads south on Main One. In addition to the two C44-9Ws, the train as a GP60B in the consist. The GP60B's were produced in the early 1990s for Santa Fe and originally wore the Warbonnet scheme. All have since been repainted, but they are very likely the last cabless ("B") units that either EMD or GE will ever produce!

A view of Palmer Lake that you don't typically see when view train pictures from the area! For awhile, I've wanted to climb the mountain to the west of the lake and see how the view looks. Well, here it is! Not too bad...of course BNSF had to have the last unit on this loaded southbound facing the wrong way! Note the head end of the train way off in the distance on the upper left side of the picture.

Three and a half hours after receiving its track warrant (while sitting in Rennicks Yard in Denver), this BNSF coal load is finally approaching the top of the hill at Palmer Lake. A classic Rio Grande signal (controlling southbound movement on Main Two) stands in the foreground.
