A look toward the stub ends of Tracks 1 and 2. For nearly 25 years, the tracks behind Union Station have been "stub" tracks, coming to a dead end. The rails once ran through the station to the southwest and connected with the Joint Line. However, after the tracks were removed, rebuilt roads and new building (including the Pepsi Center) have been built on the original grade, precluding the possibility of rails once again running south out of the station.

Clash of the centuries! The contemporary look of the Train Hall infrastructure stands in stark contrast to class Union Station. Much of Train Hall is exposed, with only portions of the platform along Tracks 1, 3, 4 and 8 covered.

Track 3 stops short of Track 1 and 2. This allows passengers to access both Track 2 and Track 3 from a single platform.

Another historic building in downtown is the Ice House. Wow if this building could talk! The things that it has seen over the decades. The rising sun has not yet peeked over the top of the building. Track 1 and a small portion of Track 2 are visible in the foreground.

Plenty of signage has been added, helping to direct passengers to the track they are looking for.

Tracks 1-3 looking back toward the station. From my position on the platform, Track 2 is not accessible. As you can see, Track 3 ends sooner than Tracks 1 and 2. This allows passengers access to both Tracks 2 and 3, depending on where they are along the platform.

Tracks 1-3 looking away from the station. You can see the base for catenary poles and signals, still yet to be erected. Likewise, it doesn't appear that any switch machines have been installed yet. Also visible in the shot is the scoreboard at Coors Field and a line of commuters making their way in to town off the HOV overpass from I-25.

A look at the backside of Union Station. You can see a new white covering extending from Train Hall to the back wall of the station.

Prior to the renovations, Amtrak passengers would descend unground to a tunnel in order to access the platform for Track 1. Now, passengers walk out the back doors directly to the platforms, same as they did through the 1990s. However, when first existing the station, passengers will find stairs/elevators descending to the "Bus Concourse". The unground bus terminal is going to replace RTD Market Street Station located a few blocks away. Passengers will be able to get to the platforms for tracks 2-8 underground, as well as the Light Rail station located a few blocks to the northwest.

In August 2011, Amtrak left Union Station for a temp station a few blocks away. Over the next 2 1/2 years, the old tracks and platform behind the station were dismantled a new "Train Hall" was constructed. On February 28, 2014, Amtrak moved back to Union Station! Much of the station is still under construction and is not scheduled to open until May 2014. But passengers have an entrance and a way to get to the California Zephyr, which now uses Track 4 out back.

The front of Union Station in Denver offers up a timeless view. The building will be preserved as a Historic Monument. The orange neon sign was added to the station in 1952 in an attempt to promote train travel as airlines were increasingly taking over the rails. Trains at the station came close to extinction in 2009, particularly after the Ski Train stopped running. Now, the station is preparing to once again become a major rail hub with commuter rail (plus Amtrak) arriving out back.

This shot looks east along RTD's future "East Line" commuter line from Union Station to DIA. The shot looks at the Havana Street grade crossing. Although no wire has been erected yet, most of the catenary poles are up along either side of the tracks. UP's Limon Sub is off to the left.

Construction of RTD's "East Line", the commuter line from Union Station to Denver International Airport, is reported as being 60% complete. Just west of Havana Street, you can see that the westbound track (to the right) is fully ballasted. The eastbound track (to the left/center) has largely been laid, but no ballast has been added yet.

Now that is a lot of concrete ties! Each (full) stack looks to have 90 ties. A very quick (and extremely rough) estimate indicates there are probably over 40,000 ties here, ready to be used! At 20" between each tie (about right for EMU commuter rail), these ties could cover 12 miles of single track or 6 miles of double track. Actually not all that much when you think about it.

All tied up? Thousands of concrete ties lay stacked up, ready for use in the construction of the RTD Gold Line from Union Station to Arvada. The line is scheduled to open in 2016.
