In August 2011, Amtrak left Union Station for a temp station a few blocks away. Over the next 2 1/2 years, the old tracks and platform behind the station were dismantled a new "Train Hall" was constructed. On February 28, 2014, Amtrak moved back to Union Station! Much of the station is still under construction and is not scheduled to open until May 2014. But passengers have an entrance and a way to get to the California Zephyr, which now uses Track 4 out back.

The front of Union Station in Denver offers up a timeless view. The building will be preserved as a Historic Monument. The orange neon sign was added to the station in 1952 in an attempt to promote train travel as airlines were increasingly taking over the rails. Trains at the station came close to extinction in 2009, particularly after the Ski Train stopped running. Now, the station is preparing to once again become a major rail hub with commuter rail (plus Amtrak) arriving out back.

This shot looks east along RTD's future "East Line" commuter line from Union Station to DIA. The shot looks at the Havana Street grade crossing. Although no wire has been erected yet, most of the catenary poles are up along either side of the tracks. UP's Limon Sub is off to the left.

Construction of RTD's "East Line", the commuter line from Union Station to Denver International Airport, is reported as being 60% complete. Just west of Havana Street, you can see that the westbound track (to the right) is fully ballasted. The eastbound track (to the left/center) has largely been laid, but no ballast has been added yet.

Now that is a lot of concrete ties! Each (full) stack looks to have 90 ties. A very quick (and extremely rough) estimate indicates there are probably over 40,000 ties here, ready to be used! At 20" between each tie (about right for EMU commuter rail), these ties could cover 12 miles of single track or 6 miles of double track. Actually not all that much when you think about it.

All tied up? Thousands of concrete ties lay stacked up, ready for use in the construction of the RTD Gold Line from Union Station to Arvada. The line is scheduled to open in 2016.

Not long ago, this empty field was the home of American Concrete Pavement. Among other things, the company built thousands of concrete ties for railroads all over the country. The plant has moved to Pueblo, CO now and construction on a new maintenance facility for RTD (for EMU vehicles) is under way.

Just a short distance west of the west switch of Mesa, construction on a new overpass for EMU commuter rail is making progress. Once complete, this bridge will be nearly 5,000 feet long! It is here that the commuter rail will leave the UP right of way and swing north, crossing the track, Airport Blvd, 32nd Avenue and I-70. This 22.8 mile long line from Union Station to Denver International Airport is scheduled to open in 2016.

The parking around the outside of Union Station has been removed and some contemporary buildings are being built in their place. You can see one of the new buildings in the distance, located between Union Station and the Ice House. Union Station is slated to reopen to the public in summer of 2014.

Scaffolding covers the exterior of Union Station as works continues to restore the historical monument. This is the scene from 17th and Wynkoop. Better this than a demolition team!

A lot of work has been done on the enclosure and tracks behind Union Station. The sign in the foreground clearly indicates there will be eight tracks total. At least one of those tracks will be reserved for "heavy rail" trains such as Amtrak. Hopefully there will be a second track dedicated to heavy rail so trains like Cheyenne Frontier Days will have a home, when needed.

Traditional shots in the back of Union Station are a thing of the past. While I am thrilled that Union Station itself isn't going anywhere, modern architecture is quickly closing in around it from all sides.

A look toward the stub-ends of the eight new tracks behind Union Station. These tracks, located beneath this interesting enclosure, will include tracks for EMU commuters to run to Denver International Airport, Arvada and eventually (if funding is found) Thornton and Boulder/Longmont.

A lot of construction is going on behind Union Station these days. New buildings (both residential lofts and hotels) are under construction and the new dome-type enclosure for the eight tracks behind Union Station is clearly visible.

This is a scene that is drastically changed in the last 15 years. 15 years ago, the tracks, the bridges and a field is just about all you would have found! Dozens of buildings have been built in that time and the tracks (both the Joint Line and Light Rail) now run through was is essentially a trench of buildings! Even just five years ago, the building to the left was a parking lot. In this shot, an RTD "E" Line train approaches the Denver Station as a southbound coal load proceeds on Main 2. A northbound empty is stopped on Main 1.
