A westbound BNSF coal load sits on the main track in Livingston, waiting for manned MRL helpers to hook on to the rear and help shove the train up and over Bozeman Pass. If you look closely, you can actually see said helper units preparing to hook on, way off in the distance (left side of the frame, between the tank cars and the coal train).

These light units are headed east toward the yard at Livingston where there is a westbound coal load waiting for them. The helpers will hook on to the end of the coal load and help shove the train over Bozeman Pass. The helpers will then return down to Livingston and do it yet again for a second coal load waiting to go over the pass as well. Fortunately, it is only about 14 miles from Livingston to the top of the pass, so it doesn't take too long for the helpers to return after each shove.

With a Form B work window on the west slope of Bozeman Pass now complete, westbounds start rolling west out of Livingston at the (east) base of Bozeman Pass. This BNSF loaded grain train is slowly moving up the 1.8% grade toward the east switch of Muir.

A pair of two-year-old SD70ACes leads Montana Rail Links "ML" manifest. The train left Missoula late last night and is headed for Laurel. This curve is just east of the siding (and very small town) of Greycliff. The train has about 55 miles left to go on its journey.

We are coming up on harvest season. And that, of course, means unit grain trains! This eastbound BNSF grain empty is clipping along on the main at Quebec, about 45 miles west of Laurel.

About 10 miles west of Laurel, Montana Rail Link's "LM" manifest is moving at track speed as the light quickly fades. The sun set about 10 minutes earlier and the train is ready for a night run to Missoula...or at least to Helena, which is a crew change point for MRL trains.
