At the east end of Plain, the Ski Train has a clear signal as it continues on its journey west. It is about 8:15am and the Ski Train is running right on time.

The tail end of the Ski Train is disappearing into the shadows of Barbara's Gulch on its journey west. In the distance near the top of the shot, note the hopper cars at Big Ten Loop.

Starting in late February, the Ski Train added Thursday's to its round trip between Denver and Winter Park. For these five weeks or so, the Ski Train will run four out of seven days of the week! Here, the train is running through Barbara's Gulch.

The Ski Train has an approach (yellow) signal at west Cliff and is slowing. It will be meeting a heavy, slow ballast train at Cliff. The ballast train is in between Crescent at Cliff right now. Passengers enjoy the luxury of the ride in the Kansas on the back of the train.

As the days are slowly getting longer, it is getting easier to get shots of the Ski Train in the evening, making its way back down the mountain into town. On this evening, the train is running a few minutes late as it approaches the west end of Cliff.

Very little light left in the sky for this shot of the eastbound Ski Train making its way back toward Denver. A few people sit in the back of the Kansas and use the vestibule lights to observe the tracks behind them.

The eastbound Ski Train blazes through the grade crossing at 72nd Avenue at track speed on its trip back to town. While it looks like the intermediate signal at Kipling is red (left side of the shot), it is actually flashing yellow (Advanced Approach). The red is a result of the long exposure to capture the "blur".

Amazing to think that this train, in one form or another, has been running on these rails for nearly 70 years! The last two cars here (Utah and Kansas) were business cars on the Rio Grande and were often seen on the back of Amtrak between Denver and Salt Lake. Now, they have a home on the Ski Train. It should be noted that back then, the Kansas was named the Wilson McCarthy.

Despite a little bit of dirt on the outside of the Ski Train, it still looks spectacular on the Moffat main with the Continental Divide as a back drop.

Figured I throw this shot into the mix because it is kind of a different perspective on a common location. The westbound Ski Train is just about to duck into Tunnel 1. This is the shot as seen from Jefferson County Open Space between CO-72 and West Clay.

At the west end of Clay, the Ski Train has nothing but clear tracks ahead. I am standing in the middle of Jefferson County Open Space for this shot. Can't drive here, but hiking is A-OK.

On a partly cloudy February morning, the Ski Train leaves Big Ten behind and rounds the curve into Clay. Note the tracks leading into Big Ten from Rocky in the lower left had corning of the picture.

This is the last shot in which the tracks west of Plain are visible from Rainbow Cut. The end of the Ski Train is about to curve into Tunnel 4 on its journey west. Looks like a few patrons are lucky enough to be able to ride the Kansas west for the day!

I really liked this shot of the California, looking down atop the vista dome car from the top of Rainbow Cut.
