Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
One of the F40PH's on the Ski Train is kicking up a bit of smoke this morning! The train is running on clear signals as it comes west on the main track at Plain toward Rainbow Cut.

This Ski Train, in its 69th Season, sits idling on the siding at Fraser. I sincerely hope that the train will run for another 69 seasons! The train holds on the siding at Fraser for four to five hours during the day while waiting to pick up skiers back at Winter Park between 3:30pm and 4:00pm.

The Ski Train is heading back to Fraser where it will wait until it is time to pick up its passengers. Not the signal at Fraser in the distance. Even further in the distance, skiers are enjoying a great day of skiing on the slopes at Winter Park.

Clouds were a bit unpredictable on this morning and the temperature was a chilly three degrees below zero! After wying at Tabernash, the Ski Train is on its way back toward Fraser. Looks like the Ski Train could stand a good power wash.

The Ski Train has once again been successfully wyed at Tabernash, the train is nearing the east end of the siding and will proceed east to Fraser on an advanced approach (flashing yellow) signal.

At the back of the train, a brakeman is aligning the switch from the wye (which the Ski Train is currently on) to the siding. After backing onto the siding, the train will continue east on the siding and return to the siding at Fraser.

After entering the main at Tabernash, the Ski Train backs down the wye track headed for the siding. A brakeman stands on the vestibule of the Kansas, protecting the reverse move.

A passenger aboard the Kansas waves at the camera out the back of the vestibule. Needless to say, that passenger is probably a bit warmer than the photographer! The Ski Train is at the east end of East Portal.

Just over a mile away from the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel, the first run of the 2008-2009 Winter Ski Train is running against blowing snow in temperatures around 0 degrees. Add the wind chill, and it was a balmy 22 degrees below zero out!

Might be tricky to figure out the location of this shot! Believe it or not, the Ski Train is on the climb to Tunnel One. There is a spot along Highway 72 where there is nothing but sky in the background.

The temperature outside for the first run of the Ski Train didn't break 15 degrees in Arvada. With the wind chill, that quickly dropped down to about -5 degrees! Skiers are indifferent as they ride in the warmth of the Ski Train, on its way west.

It has been many many years since Union Station has been this full! And it will probably be many years before it is again. Several railroads (including Union Pacific, BNSF, Norfolk Southern, the Ski Train and Amtrak) have trains in town for the Democratic National Convention. UP is on tracks four and five, BNSF and NS are on track three, the Ski Train is on track two and Amtrak is on track one.

An artistic moment struck me when returning to Denver on the Ski Train. The ground is wet after recent rains which have now moved over Denver in the distance. Meanwhile, the Ski Train races down the main at Clay toward Big Ten Loop, the siding streaking by in the foreground.
