The West Local slowly rolls by Colorado Wood & Metal alongside the Rocky Spur. While the West Local does not serve this particular business, the local still passes by on the way to and from the aggregate plant at the north end.

The West Local has completed switching at the aggregate plant at the north end of the Rocky Flat Industrial Lead and is heading back south toward the mainline at Rocky. What you might first believe are clouds in the background is actually smoke. The Cameron Peak Fire is now over 135,000 acres in size.

The Rocky Flats Industrial Lead break away from the Moffat Tunnel Sub at Rocky. It leaves the main and charges up an impressive 8% grade in order to reach the plateau that CO-93 and CO-72 are found on. Here, a pair of geeps backs down the spur with five covered hoppers toward the main.

The West Local has come to a stop toward the bottom of the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead. A brakeman has hopped off the back of the last car and is walking back to throw the switch from the main to the spur. The crew already has authority from the dispatcher to occupy the main track.

The West Local is backing up across CO-72 on the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead. A stoplight protects traffic on the road, rather than a traditional crossing signal. As the train approaches, it trips a circuit turning the stoplight red for traffic. The train also has a stop light that is either green or red, depending on the condition of the stop light for traffic.

About a mile away from the mainline at Rocky, the West Local works its way south down the Rocky Flat Industrial Lead. The local picked up these five hoppers from the aggregate plant at the end of the spur. They wyed the train (turned it around) on the wye left behind from the days of Rocky Flats about a half mile to the north.

The aggregate plant that the West Local is heading for, Trinity Lightweight, is just visible on the left side of the frame. The local will drop off seven covered hoppers and will likely pick up a few as well before returning to North Yard.

The West Local pushed away from the camera as it passes by a few companies, mainly home and commercial landscaping, as it slowly makes it way to the aggregate company at the far end of the Rocky Flat Industrial Lead.

The West Local backs up across the (former) west entrance to Rocky Flats. It is now used as the entrance to a few local companies onsite. If you look closely, you'll notice the (Moffat) mainline at Plain about 1/3 of the way up the mountain in the distance!

The West Local slowly backs across Colorado Highway 72, shoving covered hoppers back toward the aggregate plant at the far north end of the Rocky Flat Industrial Lead. This is the only customer UP still has west of Denver (on the east side of the Continental Divide, anyway).

It is not too often that a train rolls over this grade crossing! This stop light is protected the West Local as is backs up across CO-72, about a mile from the mainline at Rocky.

The West Local slows in preparation for hooking on to a trio of covered hoppers, loaded with aggregate by Texas Industries Inc. Note that the second hopper is of Chicago Northwestern heritage.

For several months, the West Local was not running. Apparently, flood waters had caused some damage along the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead. Texas Industries thought UP should repair the track and UP thought Texas Industries should. Consequently, the local stopped running and, during that time, Texas Industries trucked their aggregate to Loveland and loaded it on BNSF. It appears that the tracks on the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead has been repaired (although I have no clue by whom) and this is the third week the local has run since restarting.

There was a time in the not-too-distance past that you would have found Rio Grande geeps running on the West Local. Those days are gone now, however, as is evident in this picture. Not even UP units are being used on the West Local right now, as a trio of geeps leased from "Helm Leasing" head north on the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead.
