With the Wyoming flag unfurled on the front of UP 844, the engine (and train) roll backward on the east leg of the wye at Speer Jct. It is, of course, necessary to turn the train around for the evening trip back to Denver. The nearest wye is at Speer, roughly eight miles away from the depot in Cheyenne.

UP 1943 crosses over from Main 1 toward the Cheyenne Yard at CP W511 as a westbound prepares to pull west out of the yard on Main 4. UP 1943 will stay the night in Cheyenne before departing east of Omaha the next day. It is supposed to tour UP's system, so here's hoping the day will come when I can get some shots of it leading on the Moffat!

A going away shot of UP 1943 as a crew takes the unit down Main 1 toward the Cheyenne Depot so it can make an entrance for the assembled guests. The number 1943 was chosen because, in that year, a B-17 was christened "The Spirit of Union Pacific" and flew in 571st Bomber Squadron.

UP 1943 starts rolling east on Main 1 toward the Cheyenne Depot. This SD70AH was painted to commemorate the US military. The silver on the nose is "Air Force Silver", representing the Air Force (obviously). The gray on the long hood is "Battleship Gray" and represents the Navy. Then, the back end is camouflage in honor of both the Army and the Marines.

Pretty amazing to be able to witness a standard gauge steam engine operating in 2016! This UP 4-8-4 "Northern" class steam engine is almost 72 years old! Of those 72 years, the engine spent roughly 15 years in actual active service. It has spent the next 57 years in the excursion business.
