A going away shot of UP 1943 as a crew takes the unit down Main 1 toward the Cheyenne Depot so it can make an entrance for the assembled guests. The number 1943 was chosen because, in that year, a B-17 was christened "The Spirit of Union Pacific" and flew in 571st Bomber Squadron.

UP 1943 starts rolling east on Main 1 toward the Cheyenne Depot. This SD70AH was painted to commemorate the US military. The silver on the nose is "Air Force Silver", representing the Air Force (obviously). The gray on the long hood is "Battleship Gray" and represents the Navy. Then, the back end is camouflage in honor of both the Army and the Marines.

Pretty amazing to be able to witness a standard gauge steam engine operating in 2016! This UP 4-8-4 "Northern" class steam engine is almost 72 years old! Of those 72 years, the engine spent roughly 15 years in actual active service. It has spent the next 57 years in the excursion business.

Highball Cheyenne! UP 844 leads the Cheyenne Frontier Days special on its return journey to Denver. An afternoon thunderstorm an a BNSF coal empty setup a wonderful shot at the crossovers at CP W511.

After an on-time departure of 5pm at Cheyenne, the Cheyenne Frontier Days special rolls west, passing underneath the BNSF Front Range Sub (which has a coal empty currently sitting on it). The steam train is crossing over from Main 1 to Main 4 at CP W511 so it can proceed to Speer and then Denver on the Greeley Sub.

About 35 minutes before the departure of Cheyenne Frontier Days finds an empty westbound rail train crossing over from Main 2 to Main 1 at CP W511. The train is passing underneath BNSF's Front Range Sub, which passes through Cheyenne on a north/south route.

An eastbound double stack rolls in to Cheyenne on Main P2. Cheyenne has four main tracks (P1 - P4) located outside the depot. Cheyenne is a crew change point and these four tracks are used for crew changes on all trains coming through. Most trains only stop for 10-15 minutes for the crew change, and then continue on their journey. The dispatcher had to work with only three tracks this Saturday, with Cheyenne Frontier Days sitting on P1. An eastbound double stack coming in to town on P2. Another double stack is visible to the left on P4.

UP 844 sits on Main P1 at the Cheyenne Depot where it is taking on water. The train will wait here until it is time to depart at 5pm. Freight traffic still has to move, however, and a manifest rolls by on Main P2. Two of the steam crew members walk toward a semi tanker filled with oil for UP 844.

A close look at the nose of UP 844. The American flag and the Colorado flag definitely add some additional class! I particularly like the "844" plaque located directly beneath the headlight in the UP shield.

While I understand the general principle of a steam engine, I do not understand the more finite details. But I definitely think steam engines are amazing pieces of machinery. Love all the components visible from the outside, as well as all the steam and water to be found dripping and spraying on the outside.

A member of the UP steam crew stands on top of the "water bottle" and monitor the water levels as fresh water is added for the trip from Cheyenne back to Denver. Note the stream of water entering the water bottle to the left.
