Steam engines, obviously, require water in order to run. And a LOT of water. Thousands of gallons of water is required to boil and turn to steam. Here, in Cheyenne, the fire department is helping out by connecting their hoses to a fire hydrant on one end, and the "water bottle" on the other end.

UP 844 gets a free ride (backward) from Speer Jct to Cheyenne. The train has just been wyed (turned around) and is headed back to the depot to await the arrival of passengers in a few hours. A UP manager in a white pickup parallels the train, keeping an eye on the move.

A GE AC4400CW and an EMD SD70ACe work together to pull the Cheyenne Frontier Days train back to Cheyenne after being wyed at Speer Jct. If you look above UP 7143 and off in the distance, you can see the head end of a westbound double stack train!

The rear DPU of a westbound double stack pushes on Main 3 as a pair of diesel engines pull the Cheyenne Frontier Days train back toward Cheyenne on Main 4. Very different duties for the sister units. Note how close they are in number! UP 7143 on Frontier Days and UP 7146 on the double stack.

A westbound double stack intermodal train pulls up the grade on Main 3 toward Speer Jct. Since UP's Overland Route (which connects the east end of UP with the west end) runs through Cheyenne, you can often expect to see a lot of trains running on the UP in Cheyenne.

It is just after noon as UP 844 and train roll slowly toward the Greeley Sub from south leg of the wye at Speer Jct. In addition to carrying fuel (oil), the black tender also stores some water. the second (yellow) tender carries nothing but water for the 844 and is referred to as the "water bottle".

You have to love the modern vs classic contrast here between the double stack containers in the background on UP 844 in the foreground. The 4-8-4 "Northern" class steam engine was built by ALCO (the American Locomotive Company) is December 1944. It was the last steam engine delivered to Union Pacific. It as been in nearly-continuous excursion service since 1962.

As UP 844 comes around the south leg of the wye at Speer Jct, a westbound Z-Train passes by on Main 3 in the background. UP 844 is slowly pulling the train through the wye and on to the Greeley Sub. Once the entire train is on the Greeley Sub on the single main, a pair of diesel engines on the back of the train will pull the train on the track in the foreground, back to Cheyenne.

UP 844 gets a free ride (in reverse) as a pair of diesel units pull the Frontier Days trains down Main 4 at Speer Jct. At the far end of the wye, UP 844 will again take control and pull through one leg of the wye. Then, the diesels will pull for the return trip to Cheyenne. Note the clear signal on Main 3 for a Z-Train that is coming out of Cheyenne.

In order for the Cheyenne Frontier Days train to make the return trip from Cheyenne to Denver, the train has to be wyed (turned around). The nearest wye to Cheyenne is over six miles away at Speer Jct. UP 844 making that reverse move would take hours! So, UP has a better solution. A pair of engines simply hook on to the tail end of the train and pull it to Speer Jct. By doing this, there are no speed restrictions. Here, a pair of units pulls the train on Main 4 toward the first leg of the wye at CP W517.

A pair of AC4400CWs, one of Southern Pacific ancestry, push on the tail end of a load coal train up through Speer Jct. The head end of the train is now on the Greeley Sub and pulling toward Denver. The train is ultimately headed for the Nixon power plant in Colorado Springs.

A southbound coal load pulls toward Speer Jct on Main 4 with a trio of elephant-style GEs on the point. This train loaded at the North Antelope Mine in the Powder River Basin and is actually headed for the Nixon power plant in Colorado Springs!

UP's tracks west of Cheyenne offer an interesting configuration. Mains 1 and 2 head directly west toward Hermosa Tunnel and Laramie. Mains 3 and 4 curve south and run to Speer Jct. At Speer Jct, the Greeley Sub (toward Denver) breaks off and Mains 3 and 4 curve west. Then, the mains converge into a single main track. This track (Main 3) also runs to Hermosa, but as a single track on a completely different grade from Mains 1 and 2. The grade on Main 3 isn't nearly as steep as on Main 1 and 2, so heavy westbounds, such as the grain train in this shot, are frequently routed over Main 3 to Hermosa.

Passengers from the Cheyenne Frontier Days steam train are disembarking and getting ready to ride some buses to the Frontier Days celebration. However, several are taking advantage of the opportunity to get some pictures of UP 844, sitting on Main Track P1 at the station.

Hello old friend! The Rio Grande heritage unit has done a great job of avoiding Denver for the past few years. This is the first time I've seen it since July 2011. Hard to believe that it just celebrated its 10th birthday in June. Today, it got the honor of assisting on the Cheyenne Frontier Days train.
