AMTK 4 was swapped for AMTK 150 in Denver, resulting in a roughly two hour delay. It is unclear if AMTK 4 had a mechanical issue, or it was just swapped with AMTK 150, and AMTK 4 will show up on the Winter Park Express tomorrow morning. The lead unit on the Zephyr, AMTK 150, was taken from the Winter Park Express power. It is unclear why it was necessary to swap power. It is possible that AMTK 150 is due for a 92-day inspection and, as a result, had to be swapped and sent west to Emeryville. In any case, the Zephyr is just west of Tunnel 1, coming up to Plain. The unit has been rebuilt into a C44ACM (or, as BNSF designates it, an AC44CM). There is a push by both UP and BNSF to convert older DC units into AC units. It quickly fell to being four hours late not far west of Chicago. By the time it made it Denver, it was nearly seven hours late! Here, at 4:15pm, the train is finally heading west on Main 1 between C&S Junction and Arvada. An Amtrak P42DC was part of the problem, and had to be removed in favor of this BNSF ES44DC. A local had a warrant on the track ahead, but just cleared it up. That allowed the special here to get a new warrant to proceed from the current location up to Loveland, where the train will be turned over to the Great Western Railway. This is the scheme that was introduced in 2022 and is the new "go forward" scheme for Amtrak, replacing the Phase 5 scheme that has been the primary scheme since 2000. Superliners never really received a Phase 5 scheme per se. They received the new Amtrak logo, but kept the Phase 4b paint scheme with two thin red lines and a thicker blue line. However, Amtrak has started painting a few Superliners in what will be considered a Phase 7 scheme for the passenger cars. The scheme is very similar to the Phase 4b scheme. The thick blue line has been made ever thicker, and the thin red lines in the middle of the car have been removed. There is a section of the line that is the new darker blue, and a few white separation stripes. The Amtrak name and logo is now directly above the door. Weather in Nebraska delayed the train by a couple hours overnight, and it is now trying to make up the time here in the snowy high country. I always enjoy this perspective as the ski runs at the Winter Park Ski Resort stand out strong in the background. The train is approach a green signal at the east end of Tabernash.
