The last train to pass by the east end of Sagers in daylight (well, what's left of it anyway) was BNSF's Stockton to Denver manifest. The last few hints of sunlight are rapidly fading at 9:00pm as BNSF 4861 east heads quickly toward Grand Junction.

A BNSF trackage rights train, the MDVRBJ (Denver to Riverbank, CA) pulles into the station track at Grand Junction (about fifteen minutes after Amtrak 5 made its departure westbound). The train will cut off some cars in Grand Junction before continuing west across the Utah Desert.

After traversing the Utah Desert and Ruby Canyon, Amtrak 6 is still moving quickly through the town of Mack, CO, about 10 miles (north) west of Grand Junction. Amtrak sports engines wearing the Phase Vb scheme, a bagage car sporting the Phase III scheme, and Superliners showing off the Phase IV scheme!

Amtrak 6 met the westbound Denver to Provo trackage rights train at the siding of Wash in the town of Wellington, UT. The sidings of Wellington and Wash lay right on top of one another. You can see the signals in the distance with the west switch of Wash leading directly into the east switch of Wellington.

Stars swirl behind the signal at the east switch of Mounds. Note one star that is inconsistent with the rest (near the top of the photo). That is actually a shooting star streaking through the atmosphere!

Amtrak 5, running about four hours late, comes streaking past the view finder just west of Mounds. This was a 25 minute shot with clouds moving in and out of the frame, causing some sporadic stars to com into view.

At this lonely grade crossing in the middle of the Utah desert, a cross buck and a stop sign do their best to protect the tracks. Granted, they do their job considering the low number of cars and trains that pass through in a day! The moon shines brightly in the southern sky in the distance.

In the desert in between Wash and Mounds, the rails reflect the fading light in the western sky. Unfortunately, the rails in the desert are empty far more than they were twenty years ago under the Rio Grande.

Perhaps my best night shot to date, this was a half hour (yep, nearly 30 minutes) exposure taken at the east switch of Mounds. It was taken between 5:30am and 6:00am, although the light behind the signal is not the sun. That is ambient light from the town of Wellington, about ten miles away. Note all the stars swirling around the North Star in the upper right corner of the photo.
