UP 1983 leads a blade train carrying 30 blades eastbound on the KP line just west of Hugo, CO. We are about 100 miles east of Denver, roughly halfway between Denver and Kansas.

This shot here, east of Limon along US-40/US-287 was probably the "shot of the day" for UP 1983 and this blad train. The highway east of Limon runs up and over a hill and the tracks run around the hill. The elevation and the sun were just perfect for the shot. The storm clouds in the distance made for icing on the cake.

Considering the fact that this particular train was hauling windmill blades (for generating electricity), this shot with windmills off in the distance seemed wholly appropriate! UP 1983, the Western Pacific heritage unit, led the train east.

An eastbound blade train, led by UP 1983, passes by a "Distant Signal" just before passes underneath the US-24 overpass. US-24 connects Limon and Colorado Springs. Limon is also the location where the UP interchanges traffic with the KYLE railroad. The KYLE runs on the former Rock Island east out of Limon.

On the western edge of Limon, UP 1983 and blade train break out of the clouds and enter some nice morning light. The train passes by one of many plains industries located along the tracks.

More often than not, Colorado has clear skies on Summer mornings and then clouds build up and there are afternoon thunderstorms. That wasn't the case on this particular June morning. A cloud settled over this S-Curve west of Limon as UP 1983 pulled through the curve with a blade train.

Moving along at track speed west of Agate, got a bit of a pan shot of UP 1983. Along with the Rio Grande heritage unit, the Western Pacific wears the best-looking paint scheme of the six (in my opinion). Hard to believe it has been over 10 years since this heritage unit was first unveiled!

Union Pacific's heritage units do not grace the Denver-Metro area too often these days. However, the Western Pacific heritage unit made a quick swing through Denver in June 2016. It picked up a blade train in Greeley and then headed east on the KP toward Kansas and points beyond.

A profile shot of the Western Pacific heritage unit as it crosses a short bridge several minutes west of Agate. UP 1983 led a windmill blade train east on the KP early in the morning.

A field east of Deer Trail had a little bit of flooding, setting up a nice reflection shot for UP 1983 and UP 8224 on a beautiful June morning. Dark clouds make for a nice backdrop as the blade train passes by the field.

UP 1983 leads an eastbound blade train east of the town of Deer Trail on the KP (Kansas Pacific) line. With the downturn in coal, things have really slowed down on the KP. As few as 1 or 2 trains per 24-hour period is not uncommon! This train was able to run from Byers, CO to Sharon Springs, KS without any meets.

At 3:45am, a crew was called to hop on a "blade train" (a train with electricity-generating windmill blades) that was tied down in the siding at Mesa. The train departed Mesa around 5:45am. I got trackside just east of Deer Trail, the first spot where sunlight came out from behind morning clouds. Here, UP 1983 leads the train in the morning sun.

Speer Jct is a pretty cool place and can have quite a bit of action. At Speer Jct, Mains 3 and 4 of the Laramie Sub meet with the Greeley Sub. Trains coming off the Greeley Sub can head either east or west on the Laramie Sub, creating a wye. In this shot, the Cheyenne Frontier Days special (in the process of being wyed) comes down the west leg of the wye toward the Greeley Sub. In the distance, a westbound manifest has clear signals as it hurries west on Main 3.

The last view of this interesting UP oil train with BNSF power comes at this short but long bridge at Watkins, CO. I'm not entirely sure if there is a creek here, or if this primarily a flood plain. If you know, feel free to share in the comments!

Prior to the construction of I-70, CO-36 was the main route east of Denver out on to the plains. A westbound oil train moves up and down with the plains landscape parallel to US-36 a few miles west of Bennett, CO.
