Even though Soldier Summit has two main tracks, sidings are still occasionally necessary. If nothing else, two of them can serve as crossover between the two mains as they are "center sidings", located between the two main tracks. Kyune is the first of the sidings when heading west. The Mountaineer throttles up as the max speed increases from 30 MPH to 35 MPH. Note the very interesting signal protecting the siding. The train is already in a very long OS for the east switch of Kyune. The signals for the center-siding are located on the opposite side of Kyune Tunnels. Here, the tracks temporarily depart US-6 to follow the Price River. The road runs up a steep grade, through a tall cut through the mountain, to save time and distance. There are, in fact, only three pairs of tunnels. The first one west of Helper are the Nolan Tunnels. The upper yard, to the left, is almost completely empty. For years, it was used to store coal hoppers. With coal largely gone as a resource in the United States, only a few strings of hoppers still remain. Seems kind of ironic that there are so many empty yard tracks here, when UP uses CTC sidings in the desert for storing cars. The train will be rebranded from the Rockies to the Red Rocks to the Canyon Spirit. The train, for the first time, rolls by the Amtrak platform in Helper on Main 1. If you've seen oil trains running on the Moffat in Colorado, this is where they are headed (if they are empty) or where they are coming from (if they are loaded). It is colorful and covered in stickers. The gas is a bit pricey...$2.00 more per gallon than the Exxon a few miles east in Thompson Springs...but it is quite the little station. In 2026, the plan is to expand service of the train from Denver to Salt Lake City. This is the a non-revenue test run of the service. Employees of the Mountaineer have detrained and are gathered for a briefing in advance of the upcoming season, set to start in a couple of weeks.
