Looking east from the Glenwood Springs depot, we see several Amtrak California that are catching a ride on the Zephyr from California to points east. This meant the power had to pull beyond the platform, much further than is typical for the stop here in Glenwood.

A longer-than-normal Zephyr (13 cars, compared to 9) heads east along I-70 in western Colorado. The train will pass through the town of New Castle before entering the west end of Glenwood Canyon. Because the train can go 79 MPH here, it would not be possible to catch up to the train again until Glenwood Springs.

The trees and grass are really starting to green up here at the start of May as the Eastbound Zephyr flies by at 79 MPH as it approaches a connector road that connects US-6 and the I-70 Frontage Road (across I-70).

The profile of the Eastbound Zephyr looks a little different today! That is because the train has a quartet of Amtrak California cars on the headend. While I do not know for sure where they were headed, I would speculate they are going to Beech Grove, IN. Amtrak has its main maintenance facility here.

The eastbound Zephyr accelerates up toward the posted trackspeed of 79 MPH as it is just east of the control point of Parachute (visible in the shot). This control point leads to a small BNSF yard that was once used for soda ash trains out of the plant at Parachute. Beyond that is the siding of Grand Valley, so named for this grand (and wide) valley the tracks run through here.

A pair of units sit idling in the yard at Glenwood Springs. Earlier in the day, there had been three units here, presumably waiting for an eastbound coal train to be used as mid-train swing helpers. However, earlier in the day, a crew showed up and took one of the units east out of the yard. Where it ended up going? I do not know!

A Canadian National ES44DC leads a westbound oil train at De Beque on the Glenwood Springs Subdivision. If you look closely, you can see a white "D" (made out of rocks) on the hillside in the distance. The "D", of course, represents the town of De Beque.

An empty BNSF oil train is running on clear signals as it heads west on the main at De Beque, just about halfway between Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction. A rare visitor from the north leads the train on its journey.

The westbound Zephyr glides along the Colorado River just a few miles east of Dotsero. AMTK 156 was taken off the Winter Park Express a week earlier as the Zephyr needed it for power. It was then returned to Chicago for a 92-day inspection, and is now back on the Zephyr once again!

The curves of the track along the Dotsero Cutoff are, in general, not quite as tight as those on other parts of the Moffat. As a result, the Zephyr is able to move along the cutoff at speeds around 50 MPH. Here, the Zephyr is at track speed as it glides down the grade that averages around 0.3%.

If you look closely, you can see a clear signal on the main near the top of the frame for the eastbound Zephyr. meanwhile, the switch at the west end of Range is about to throw. Neither Zephyr would have to stop here, creating what is referred to as a "rolling meet".

One of the coolest sidings to witness meets at is the 7,700 foot long siding of Range. Colorado River Road goes over a hill to the west, giving in interesting perspective of this very long and straight siding. Frequently the eastbound and westbound Zephyrs will meet here, and today is no exception.

The Eastbound Zephyr just left Dotsero and is now on the Dotsero Cutoff. The cutoff was started in 1932 and was completed in 1934. The cutoff, running nearly 40 miles, connected the mainline of the Denver and Salt Lake at Bond, CO to the mainline of the Denver and Rio Grande Western at Dotsero, CO. By the 1930s, the D&RGW controlled the D&SL, so the cutoff created a far more direct route between Denver and Salt Lake City.

After completing its station stop in Glenwood Springs, the eastbound Zephyr is on the move again on the main track at Grizzly. Grizzly is one of three sidings located within the splendor of Glenwood Canyon. The other two sidings are Shoshone and Allen.
