While I have shot a fair amount along the Glenwood Springs Subdivision between Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction, I have never actually shot at the siding of Una. At least, not prior to this shot! The tracks can largely be seen from I-70 between Glenwood and Grand Junction. However, from west of Parachute (near Una) to De Beque, the tracks and I-70 separate. You have to take old US-6 to follow the tracks directly.

The eastbound Zephyr is moving along at track speed (70 MPH) on the mainline at Una. Union Pacific is in standard "summer maintenance mode", with a slew of maintenance vehicles parked on the siding.

A pair of brand new ACS-64 (built by Siemens) are being moved on the Zephyr from California to Chicago. There, another train will take the engines to the Northeast Corridor. The units feature cabs at both ends of the unit and are, of course, electric. You can see the pantographs (red) on the top which can be extended to connect to the catenary above the rails for power.

After a slight delay stopped at the depot in Grand Junction (due to a mechanical issue), the eastbound Zephyr is back on the roll in the town of Fruitvale just outside Grand Junction. The train has a fresh crew on board. Grand Junction is a crew change point for Amtrak. The eastbound Zephyr has a crew run it from Salt Lake City (home base) to Grand Junction (away base). Then, a new crew hops on to take the train from Grand Junction (away base) to Denver (home base).

On a slow, partly cloudy Sunday morning, a Grand Junction crew uses a pair of GP40-2s to switch some cars around in the west end of the Grand Junction yard. A month ago, I happened to shoot this exact same GP40-2 (UP 1459) in North Yard in Denver!

Both of these GP40-2s started out wearing scarlet and gray as Cotton Belt units! Now sporting their UP scheme (with CNW-inspired lightning bolt), they work on some switching on the west side of the yard in Grand Junction.

The private cars "Evelyn A Henry" and "Warren R Henry" bring up the tail end of the westbound California Zephyr as it blazes toward a clear signal at 70 MPH. The town of New Castle, CO, which the train is passing through, is about 10 miles west of Glenwood Springs and has a population of roughly 2,000 people.

The scene at east New Castle is a very green one, thanks to all the moisture Colorado has been getting this May. The westbound Zephyr, running about 2 1/2 hours late, passes by a Pepsi warehouse at track speed. Glenwood Springs is located beyond the canyon seen to the left side of the frame, in the distance.

The journey (by rail) from Glenwood Springs to Grand Junction is about 90 miles. The Zephyr does not waste much time on that journey! It can go at least 60 MPH for about 55 of those miles, and at least 70 MPH for 40 miles. One such stretch of 70 MPH track is seen here, just east of the small town of New Castle, CO.

After meeting its counterpart at the siding of Range, the westbound Zephyr is now gliding downhill along the bank of the Colorado River. You couldn't ask for a more perfect January day than this.

I really like the siding of Range. It is nearly 8,000 feet long and basically straight as an arrow! You can get a great, elevated perspective from the west end, too. Case in point is a look at the westbound Zephyr as it departs Range.

Unless one of the Zephyrs is running extremely late, an eastbound Zephyr and westbound Zephyr meet once daily somewhere in Colorado. An example of one such meeting is happening here at the siding of Range. The eastbound Zephyr heads down the main as the westbound Zephyr awaits a clear signal at west Range to continue toward Glenwood Springs and beyond.

When both Zephyrs are running on time, they will frequently meet at either Dotsero or Range. Dotsero is probably the more common siding...however, on this day, there was a string of empty hoppers being stored in the siding at Dotsero. Consequently, the eastbound and westbound Zephyrs are meeting at Range. The westbound Zephyr is holding the siding at the eastbound Zephyr knocks down the signal at the west end.

Why is Glenwood Springs such a popular destination for people (whether it be by train or car)? It is largely thanks to the hot springs pool and lodge, seen in the background on the other side of the Colorado River. Water comes out of the ground at 122°F. It is then cooled before being placed in to either the large pool (1 million gallons of water at 90°F) or the "therapy" pool (90,000 gallons of water at 104°F).

Odd shadows (thanks to winter lighting) are cast on the Zephyr as it sits at the depot at Glenwood. A lot of passengers board the train, most of which are likely headed home to Denver.
