The Golden Local starts pulling across 44th Avenue and in to the upper yard in Golden. The brakeman, see walking to the right, just aligned the derail that protects cars in the yard, and is now walking back. A handful of cars will be spotted on one of the tracks just east of the yard.

One of the great things about this picture is that there is a certain timelessness about it. While it is true the BNSF letting and scheme date the image somewhat, the fact that SD40-2s are still the power of choice for most yard and local jobs, this could just as easily be 1988 as 2018.

This eastbound BNSF manifest had an approach signal at the west end of Leyden and, as such, the engineer was slowing the train in preparation to stop at the east end. However, by the time the train had the east signal in sight, it, too, was an approach. The manifest was following an eastbound coal load that was moving quite slowly, keeping the manifest on yellows.

A relatively short BNSF Provo-Denver rolls slowly down the main at Leyden. The train had an approach (yellow) signal at the west end as it is following a slow moving coal load. If you look down the tracks a bit on the siding, you'll note the house track at Leyden. Once upon a time (when Rocky Flats was still around), the house track almost always had some hopper cars on it that the West Local would switch. These days, however, it is typically empty and full of weeds.
