The brakeman from the Golden Switch has realigned the derail at the east end of the upper yard in Golden for the derail position. He is about to put the padlock back on before picking up the FRED from the local and tying up at the yard office.

After spotting a few cars in one of the tracks east of the upper yard in Golden, the engineer on BNSF 1680 has released the independent brake and is starting to throttle up a bit, in order to take the remaining cars in to the yard.

A pair of SD40-2s shove backward against their train as they work to spot about a half dozen cars in one of the tracks just to the east of the upper yard in Golden, on the other side of 44th Avenue.

The Golden Local starts pulling across 44th Avenue and in to the upper yard in Golden. The brakeman, see walking to the right, just aligned the derail that protects cars in the yard, and is now walking back. A handful of cars will be spotted on one of the tracks just east of the yard.

One of the great things about this picture is that there is a certain timelessness about it. While it is true the BNSF letting and scheme date the image somewhat, the fact that SD40-2s are still the power of choice for most yard and local jobs, this could just as easily be 1988 as 2018.

The Golden Switch is descending down a gentle grade on BNSF's Golden Sub, across the bridge at MP 14.23. The train is about done with their daily switching and will be tying up in the yard in Golden, parallel to the Coors Brewing Copy, soon.

Four GEs (three on the point, one bringing up the rear) manage this train composed primarily of tank cars (as most of BNSF's trains on the Moffat are) heads east out of Leyden.

This eastbound BNSF manifest had an approach signal at the west end of Leyden and, as such, the engineer was slowing the train in preparation to stop at the east end. However, by the time the train had the east signal in sight, it, too, was an approach. The manifest was following an eastbound coal load that was moving quite slowly, keeping the manifest on yellows.

A trio of elephant-style GEs leads up this eastbound manifest at Leyden. The paint schemes takes us through the years of BNSF. A New Image leads, followed by a Heritage 2, and then the original Heritage "Goat Boat".

A relatively short BNSF Provo-Denver rolls slowly down the main at Leyden. The train had an approach (yellow) signal at the west end as it is following a slow moving coal load. If you look down the tracks a bit on the siding, you'll note the house track at Leyden. Once upon a time (when Rocky Flats was still around), the house track almost always had some hopper cars on it that the West Local would switch. These days, however, it is typically empty and full of weeds.

Here is something of a rare sight! UP is using a borrowed ES44C4 from BNSF to bring up the tail end of this eastbound coal load as it departs the siding at Mesa.

After waiting for a westbound covered hopper train to clear (getting into the clear in the yard at Gallup), this eastbound intermodal train now has a clear signal and is on the move on Main 1.

The town of Gallup, NM, along I-40 and BNSF's Transcon, has a (relatively) small yard in it. Here, a westbound covered hopper train is entering in to the yard on the yard lead. The engines seen are the rear DPUs, slowly moving away from the photographer.

During the short few hours I had to spend along the BNSF Transcon during a road trip, I found it rather ironic that two of the three trains I ended up shooting happened to be baretables! Here, a pre-production ES44DC and a C44-9W lead a baretable west on the Transcon just west of Kingman, AZ along classic Route 66.

As Amazon continues to grow, their fleet of trailers is growing as well. And, as one might expect, they are shipping by rail more and more! The rather unique blue trailers are a welcome sight on intermodal trains on BNSF's Transcon route.
