Not a sight you see every day! A Rio Grande SD40T-2 on BNSF rails in Golden, CO. BNSF is moving DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) from the Coors Brewery to the Colorado Railroad Museum, just a few miles away. Note the "M" on the mountain in the distance, representing the Colorado School of Mines.

SD40-2s BNSF 1826 and BNSF 1665 escort a cousin Dash-2, DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) east near milepost 14.5 of BNSF's Golden Sub. DRGW 5401 has been stored on Coors property for the past eight years, waiting for the Colorado Railroad Museum to work out a space for it. The unit had been stored next to the building almost directly above the cab of BNSF 1826.

After spending roughly eight years on the Coors Brewing Company grounds, DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) is rolling one last time. A pair of BNSF cousins (SD40-2s) bring the Tunnel Motor up to BNSF's track from Coors property.

BNSF 1665 cuts away from BNSF 1826 and heads down in to Coors yard in Golden. BNSF 1826 will follow in a few minute. The two SD40-2 will couple on to either end of DRGW 5401 to transport it the short distance to the Colorado Railroad Museum.

For several weeks now, UP has kept this ES44C4 (leased from BNSF) and the MoPac Heritage unit running between the West Elk Mine in western Colorado and destinations east. Surprisingly, this is the fourth trip west to the mines!

After meeting an eastbound manifest at Leyden, this westbound coal empty is pulling out of the siding and heading west. Three units are more than sufficient power for this (relatively light) empty.

I always enjoy capturing a nice roster shot of a C44-9W that still wears the original Heritage scheme. These units are often referred to as "Goat Boats". The "Goat" reference comes from the fact that this paint scheme is very close to Great Northern's paint scheme, and the logo for Great Northern included a goat. The "Boat" reference comes from the fact that GE unit were once referred to as "U-Boats" as they had a "U" designation in their models in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.

An eastbound BNSF manifest has the three most recent paint schemes represented as it knocks down a clear signal at MP 14.5. The dispatcher is checking with the crew to see how long they have to work. The answer is 16:45, meaning they should have no problem making it in to the yard.

A westbound UP coal empty is led by a highly colorful consist in to the siding at Leyden. The train, led by BNSF 8001, will meet an eastbound BNSF manifest here in the siding. BNSF 8001 is an ES44C4, which were primarily designed for fast trains over (relatively) flat routes. Interesting to see one on a coal train!
