Yard Shots Florida East Coast
Had to grab a roster shot of this Florida East Coast SD70M-2. I think this is a really cool regional railroad that operates between Jacksonville, FL and Miama, FL. One of the things I really like about it is that it is primarily an intermodal railroad with multiple TOFC and COFC trains running daily across the railroad.

After several days of not managing to catch any Florida East Coast action (at least, not in good lighting), I finally caught my break in the 11th hour! 10 minutes before my train chasing for the trip was done, Florida East Coast sent Train #101 south out of Bowden Yard. Here, it is being led by FEC 106 and CITX 142 (a leaser SD70M-2).

Train #107 departs from Bowden Yard off the east track at Sunbeam Road. It is 5:45pm and there is only about 10 minutes of light left in the sky.

Yeah, this definitely isn't anywhere near my best shot ever. But since this is the first time I've ever shot in Florida, I decided to include it. I waited 90 minutes for this Florida East Coast intermodal train (Train #107) to depart. It finally left Bowden Yard at 5:45pm, well after the sun had set. So, this ISO 1600 shot was the best I could come away with.

A pair of GP40-2's working on switching in Bowden Yard. Most of Florida East Coast's power does not have dynamic brakes. Which of course makes sense. The railroad has little change in elevation and if there are dynamic brakes, its just something else that needs to be maintained.

Although it is a relatively small railroad with about 90 units on its roster, Florida East Coast recently picked up eight SD70M-2's fresh from EMD. Four of them have a blue and yellow scheme and four of them have a red, white and blue. Here, one of each leads Train #107, still assembling in Bowden Yard.

Just like Rio Grande was so many years ago, Florida East Coast is an all-EMD operation. Here in Bowden Yard it is a see of spartan cabs as hostlers move power around.

Does this paint scheme look a little bit familiar? I'm guessing yes! Florida East Coast acquired 16 SD40-2's from Union Pacific. They took "Union Pacific" off the long hood and the shield off the nose and replaced them with "Florida East Coast" and their logo, respectively. Here, one such SD40-2 is being moved around by hostelers in Bowden Yard.
