It is pretty common to find major summer storms along the Front Range in summer, and today was no exception! A major storm, dumping rain and hail, moves through the southern suburbs of Denver as a single UP SD70M leads an SC-44 Charger headed for Avondale (east of Pueblo) for testing.

It is entirely possible that you will be seeing a lot of these units in the future! This is a Siemens-built SC-44 "Charger", and it is being proposed as the successor to GE's (now Wabtec's) P42DC. This is already happening on some state-supported routes, such as the Amtrak Cascades route. But Amtrak has a tentative order for 75 of these for use on long distance trains. Amtrak crews are reportedly not fans of these units. They are lighter and have far less protection on the head end, should they run in to something.
