A pair of DPUs bring up the tail end of BNSF's Provo-Denver as the train passes 40-50 gondolas, tied down in the siding here at Leyden. Note the red flag that has been placed in the middle of the siding, facing the gondolas. There is a portable derail on the siding just beyond the red flag (toward the camera).

BNSF 5699 leads BNSF's daily manifest east on the main at Leyden. Note the ballast is lighter on the main compared to the siding. UP dropped fresh ballast along the main about a week earlier as part of a maintenance project on the Moffat. Gondolas are still being stored in the siding here at Leyden.

BNSF's Provo-Denver has a full ten units on the point of the train eastbound on the main at Leyden. Most of these units are not online, and are being transported to Denver (or beyond).

The westbound Zephyr got a late start (about an hour) out of Chicago yesterday afternoon. It lost a little more time across the plains, and is now just over two hours late as it heads west on the main track at Leyden.

As a BNSF oil train heads west on the main toward a green signal at the west end of Leyden, we also note a red flag in the middle of the siding. The red flag is protecting a manual derail that has been installed on the north rail beyond the red flag. The derail is protecting a string of 40 or so gondolas stored in the siding of Leyden.

Six units lead this BNSF oil train westbound on the main at Leyden. The train is passing by a string of about 40 gondolas that are currently in long term storage here in the siding.

The crew for this westbound coal empty was called about five hours earlier at 8am, before the train had actually arrived on Bypass 1 in Denver. Once arriving, the crew had to shuffle some power around. Alas, the SD70ACe in the fourth position is not loading, and the train is limping into Leyden to check the problem. It would turn out to be a faulty MU cable, and not a problem with the unit itself. After replacing the MU cable, the unit started loading and the train continued west after a 15 minute delay.

With the increased costs of transporting private passenger cars on Amtrak trains, it has become far less common for private cars to appear on the end of the Zephyr. However, on this evening, private cars "Colonial Crafts" and "NYC-3", the first in a Pennsylvania railroad scheme, and the second in a New York Central scheme, ride along on the back of the train.

BNSF 6241 leads the Provo-Denver at the east end of Leyden. Note that the derail is set on the siding at Leyden. This is set to protect a string of 40 (or so) gondolas that are tied down in the siding. For whatever reason, UP has decided that Leyden is a great place to store cars long term.

Following about three blocks behind UP's MGJNY is BNSF's Provo-Denver. These are the only two eastbound manifests that will run over the Moffat today. Lately, it has become fairly common for the two trains to be closely following one another in the morning hours, setting up a great bit of action. Here, the train is passing a string of gondolas at Leyden.

After about a month with Leyden be open and available for meets, UP once again brought a string of about 40 gondolas out for longer term storage. The West Local brought the car out on May 7, 2025. After a derailment at Rocky on Friday, which still has the main out-of-service, it sure would be nice if the siding at Leyden was open for meets! Alas, such is not the case.

When I was a kid, I remember seeing "Rail Box" boxcars and "Rail Gon" gondolas. Rail Box boxcars are pretty rare in 2025, but you can definitely still find Rail Gon gondolas. One such example is one of 41 gondolas that have been tied down in the siding at Leyden for the past six months.

A GP40N and a GP38N are power on the West Local. This is the first time the West Local has been called in months, save for about a week ago when it came out and picked up half the gondolas being stored at Leyden. Today, it has again been called to come out to Leyden and pick up the 41 remaining gondolas still tied down in storage at Leyden.
