After meeting the Zephyr at Rocky, this MGJNY is headed east on the main at Leyden. The train likely has more empties than loads, as the two GEs on the point are the only two units on the train.

BNSF's Denver-Provo is pulling into the siding at Leyden. It won't have to wait too long for an eastbound oil train that will meet it on the main, continuing in to Denver.

I was a little bit surprised to find UP 1100, a GP60, on the eastbound MGJNY. Why surprised? Well, I caught the same unit also going east exactly two weeks earlier. Heading east again so soon, makes me suspect that it has some sort of mechanical issue that needs to be sorted out. If that's the case, it is likely headed for North Platte, NE.

A little over halfway through Leyden, UP's thrice weekly MGJNY (Manifest, Grand Junction to Denver) is accelerating toward track speed as it passes by the numerous western Arvada neighborhoods, most of which were built in the last 25 years.

Can you spot both the trains in this shot? The eastbound UP manifest is pretty obvious. But, less obvious, is the oil train off in the distance, crossing like a thin black stripe across the mountain in the distance. This westbound oil train is at Eisele (Clay) after meeting the manifest at Rocky.

Four units are leading an eastbound loaded oil train on the main at Leyden. The crew has about one hour left to work before running out of hours. After making its way through a handful of 15 MPH slow orders (due to heat), the train is on green signals on the main at Leyden, now only about 10 miles from Denver.

A relatively short BNSF Provo-Denver makes its way through the various neighborhoods located in western Arvada. The manifest is short enough that it does not even have any DPUs on the tail end. Very unusual for this particular train.

This westbound oil empty just came out of Denver and had to pull over at Leyden, the first siding west of town. The train will be briefly delayed as it waits for a late Zephyr, currently on its way out of Denver around North Yard.

Earlier in the day, this train in the siding at Leyden stalled out on the climb out of Rocky and backed in to Leyden. That first crew tied the train down and were picked up by a van. A second crew brought a new unit out to Leyden. The problem as the previous leader was leaking air so bad, it could not be repaired or bypassed. The second crew brought all three units from the head end back to North Yard. Most like, it'll take a third crew to get this empty oil train more than 10 miles west of North Yard!

It is always somewhat interesting to catch a unit that has all-matching numbers for its number. A good example is UP 6666, which was the second unit on this eastbound loaded oil train at Leyden. The unit has worn this same number since it was delivered to UP 27 years ago, in July 1997.

Earlier in the day, this westbound oil empty stalled out on the climb out of Rocky. It only had two units on the head end at that point. A new crew brought UP 8547 out of North Yard for the journey west. Unfortunately, that alone is not enough to take care of the problem. The crew reported the (now) second unit is leaking air so badly, the train cannot be taken out of emergency. The crew spoke to the dispatcher and requested a bypass hose. A hose will be brought out of North Yard to connect to the air hose on the back of UP 8547 and the back of the third unit, completely bypassing the second unit. It will be isolated and, hopefully, the train can then proceed west.

A new crew is slowly backing UP 8547 on to UP 6413 near the west end of Leyden. Though out of sight, the conductor is on the ladder on the opposite side of UP 8547, using hand signals to instruct the engineer on how close they are to connecting with UP 6413.

A pair of AC4400CWs, both of which are former Espee units (SP 367 and SP 203) are leading a westbound empty oil train. The lead unit is leaking air and the train is stuck in emergency. Later in the day, a new crew will bring out a new unit.

This westbound oil train stalled out on the climb to Big Ten west of Rocky. The train backed down here and went into emergency. The crew found that the lead unit is severely leaking air. The crew has been instructed to tie the train down and a new crew will bring a new unit out from North Yard later in the day.

Bringing up the tail end of this BNSF Provo-Denver manifest is a BNSF ES44AC and a Norfolk Southern AC44C6M (an NS rebuild from a C44-9W). Norfolk Southern has long been known for conducting rebuilds itself at its Altoona shops rather than contracting out for rebuilds. This is a practice that other Class 1 railroads are starting to embrace to avoid having to buy new, expensive Tier-4 compliant locomotives.
