Just south of the E-470 overpass, a sole CSX ES44AH leads a special train north on the Greeley Sub. The two curious looking cars on this train are carrying radioactive nuclear material. The casks allow the material to be safely transported by rail.

Just west of the small town of Watkins, this special westbound (with a sole CSX leader) crosses a short trestle on the trip. Once arriving Denver, the crew will be relieved and a new crew will take the train north on the Greeley Sub.

A Department of Defense caboose, which is really a bit of a mobile command center, is on the back of a train transporting used nuclear material. The crew aboard monitors as well as safeguards the nuclear material during transport.

An unexpected train came west on the Limon Sub on this Sunday morning. Two nuclear casks were being moved by a single CSX ES44AH, seen here crossing Kiowa Creek near Bennett. The nuclear casks are used to transport radioactive material safely by rail.

Three elephant-style GEs lead an eastbound loaded oil train across West Bijou Creek on the KP, just west of Byers. Half of this bridge was completely rebuilt 10-15 years ago. From this shot, you can probably tell which half of the bridge received that rebuild!

A lot of the smaller creeks on the Colorado plains are typically dry, particular at this time of year. Kiowa Creek is no exception, but still has a nice bridge, with plenty of fall-color trees in the area as a UP oil train crosses and heads east.

When I saw the headlight on the horizon, I originally thought this was going to be the Limon Local. I was pleasantly surprised to find an eastbound loaded oil train instead, heading out onto the plains on the Limon Sub. Considering how few trains run on the KP, this was a nice surprise.

An eastbound oil train has left CTC limits behind at Mesa and is now headed east in TWC (track warrant control) limits. So why is there a trackside signal? And an ever better question...why is the signal yellow when the train is in the block beyond the signal? The key is the "D" plate located on the signal mast near the bottom. That "D" plate indicates this is a "distant signal". This signal does not give any occupancy information about the block ahead. It only gives westbound trains an indication of the CTC signal at the east end of Mesa. Since that signal at East Mesa is currently red, this distant signal shows a yellow (Approach) indication. If the signal at East Mesa were green, this signal would also show a green. Even with something in the block immediately beyond the signal. Indeed, in TWC limits, there are no "blocks" per se.

UP's MNYGR, manifest from North Yard, CO to Green River, WY is hustling along at track speed as it approaches an intermediate in advance of Brighton, where it will take the siding to meet a southbound. If you look in the distance on the left side of the shot, you can just see the Denver skyline!

A westbound BNSF coal load sits idling on the siding at Barr. The train is currently tied down here, waiting on a fresh crew to come out of Denver. There are only two tracks (Coal 1 and Coal 2) at the yard in Denver that BNSF can use for trains waiting for a recrew. When both of those are plugged, they have to find alternative places for tying trains down.

On a beautiful Friday and Thirteenth, the morning westbound Zephyr blasts by Barr Lake on BNSF's Brush Sub, a nice reflection coming off the lake. The Zephyr is running 30 minutes ahead of schedule today, meaning passengers will have an extended air break at the station in Denver.

Four ES44s (a mix of ES44ACs and ES44C4s) lead an extremely long intermodal train that is actually originating from the Logistics Center Hudson, about 30 miles northeast of Denver. The massive train is headed for the piers in Long Beach, CA.

Forest fire in the the Oregon and Montana area have resulted in a week of very hazy skies in Colorado as prevailing winds have taken the smoke southeast. While not particularly enjoyable as the air quality has significantly decreased, the one benefit about the smoky atmosphere is a bit of red and yellow near dusk as the sun shines through the smoke. Meanwhile, a westbound UP oil empty rolls west on the single track main of the Limon Sub toward Denver.
