The train is slowing as it has an Approach (yellow) signal at the east end of Irondale. It will be meeting an eastbound coal empty there. As you can see here, there is a hill east of Denver on the Brush Sub that this westbound coal load has just climbed over. Indeed, they are probably one of the least photographed types of trains I have. However, BNSF does run a Z-Train between Denver and Chicago (and back) six days a week. The eastbound version typically departs Denver shortly after sunrise in the summer months. Here, an ES44C4 and a pair of C44-9Ws lead the hot shot east by the glass reflection of Barr Lake. This is an SD70M-2, the DC-version of its far-more-common brother, the SD70ACe. Neither BNSF nor UP have an SD70M-2s on the roster, which is why it is a rather rare catch in Colorado. Several such railfans are gathered near the west end of Barr siding to get some pictures of BNSF 6017. It was recently painted and wears a commemorative 25th Anniversary paint scheme. That's just a year shy of how long Burlington Northern existed! It was created in 1970 and, of course, became part of BNSF in 1996 with the merger. You can see the BN logo represented on the long hood of the unit, along with Santa Fe and the railroads that merged to make BN in 1970.
