A southbound stack train approaches MP 32 on the Front Range Sub, and is being led by three thirty-year-old EMD's, the second of which was once a Rio Grande SD40T-2. It is now National Railway Equipment (NREX) 5398.

Under partly cloudy skies, BNSF 8026 leads a southbound STCPDEN along Valmont Reservoir and the Valmont Power Plant. The train has three classic EMD's (all rated as SD40-2s) and they sounded (and looked) great the 6600 foot long double stack train.

Valmont Power Plant in Boulder receives coal from a joint effort between Union Pacific and BNSF. The coal comes from Union Pacific's North Fork Branch near Grand Junction. Once in Denver, two UP units are left on the train and a BNSF SD70MAC is added. On this day, BN 9556 (in "green and cream") is slowing as it passes along Valmont Reservoir.

Although the lighting is not perfect because the sun is on the opposite side of the train, I like the shot of an empty BNSF ballast train sitting in the siding at Boulder right at MP 27.

An empty BNSF rail train waits on the siding in Boulder for the northbound MDENLAU. The train was being led by two elephant-style UP C44AC-CTE's (Tier 1 compliant), complete with flags and wings!

The Valmont Coal train is stopped in Boulder on the Front Range Sub while the conductor walks the train. The coal is provided to the Valmont power plant in Boulder by Union Pacific. However, BNSF provides the crew (and power) to get the train to Boulder from Denver. On this day, the power was CN 2680 and NS 9320, both C44-9CW's. Both are rare visitors to Colorado!

An MRL SD40 is squished between two BNSF C44-9W's as this MDENLAU (with several COFC's up front) follows the Diagonal Highway (which runs between Boulder and Longmont).

Union Pacific supplies coal to the Valmont power plant in Boulder. Two UP units remain on the coal train for power, and a BNSF unit (typically an SD70MAC) is added to the point for the trip from Denver to Boulder.

Early on a cold Colorado morning, the daily MDENLAU is approaching the station sign Boulder. The train has some colorful power today, with a warbonnet (BNSF 718), a Heritage-II, an Oakway SD60, and a green BN SD40-2.

The only two regular freights on BNSF's Front Range Sub in the MDENLAU and MLAUDEN. On the first Monday of 2005, however, there was a VPTLDEN that was running south on the Front Range Sub. It was led by BNSF 4999. Here, the train is passed under Foothills Pkwy at MP 32.

On a beautiful Friday afternoon, a southbound BNSF manifest works its way past milepost 25 and the Valmont Power Plant in Boulder. The train is led by a Dash 9-44CW and a former Santa Fe SD45. The SD45 is now listed as NREX 6410, and has quite possibly been rebuilt to SD40-2 specifications.
