A southbound Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest rounds the curve near MP 17 just north of Broomfield. Note the Hyatt off to the left. That Hyatt, as well as the apartment and condo complex, have all been built in the last seven years or so.

A pair of Norfolk Southern units (plus a Heritage 2 unit obscured by the curve) lead a southbound Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest. The second unit out is one of Norfolk Southerns 20 heritage units. Specifically, it is the "Southern" heritage unit.

While I do not personally care for the short days of winter, I do like the quality of light generated by the low sun in the morning and the evening. This southbound Cheyenne-Denver manifest, with power representing three different decades, heads south on the main at Broomfield.

In the last few years, Union Pacific retired some of its older power such as C40-8's and SD60's. Frequently when old power is retired by a Class 1, it either winds up on a smaller railroad, or it is picked up by a leasing company. Such is the case here. This SD60 was picked up by National Railway Equipment Leasing and is currently putting in hours on BNSF.

Longs Peak stands tall in glorious December morning light as a southbound manifest rolls down the main at Broomfield. The train just received a track warrant between the north and south ends of Broomfield. It will hold the main to meet two northbound coal empties.

A northbound BNSF manifest approaches the Northwest Parkway underpass in Broomfield, not far south of Louisville. The apartment and condo complex in the background is very new. Ten years ago, none of that had been built and that area was occupied by an empty field.

Being a rather cold and gloomy day, black and white felt appropriate for this shot as a northbound BNSF manifest passes by a lone tree near recently constructed apartments and condos.

A southbound manifest is holding short of the Nickel Street grade crossing on the main track in the distance. It is waiting for the rail train rolling down the siding to the right. The rail train just released its warrant. This will allow the manifest to copy a new warrant from the dispatcher to proceed from the south siding switch of Broomfield all the way in to town.

Got sulfur? If not, this train is for you! The "stinky slinky" carries molten sulfur from Bonneville, WY to Galveston, TX. After meeting two northbounds, and now with a fresh warrant, the train is continuing on toward Denver for a crew change.

Occasionally, BNSF will send a coal empty north to the Powder River Basin in Wyoming on the Front Range Sub instead of the Brush Sub. Such was the case on this morning. This coal empty is following another northbound and already has a warrant to continue north out of the siding.

The siding at the main are on very different grades near the west end of Broomfield. This is because, once upon a time, the two lines belonged to separate railroads. In this shot, the train on the right (the "Stinky Slinky") is holding while the train on the left (a coal empty) pulls north through the siding.

Tried my best to get a rural looking shot despite the fact this area is anything but rural anymore! The Flat Iron Crossing mall is behind the train to the left and a relatively new condo complex is to the right. However, the Rockies look fantastic on a sunny February morning. Interestingly, you can actually see UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub on the mountains in the distance! Plainview is roughly above the double stacks (with Rainbow Cut above the first car) and tunnels 3 and 4 are above the lead unit.

Who will reach the grade crossing first? The double stack is pulling in to the clear on the siding as a southbound molten sulfur train (called the "stinky slinky") starts pulling on the main. Both trains are blowing their horns as they approach Nickel Street.

It would seem that the siding at Broomfield hasn't been used in a day or two! The rail head is completely covered by snow even though there hasn't really been any snow fall in 24 hours.
