Ten years ago, the C44-9W (AKA Dash 9-44CW) was king of BNSF's roster. They had more of these on the roster than any other model. Today, the ES44DC and ES44AC (including the ES44C4) reign king. Good to see the paint scheme still in pretty great shape here on BNSF 4078.

A couple times a year, I like to grab a shot of the engine tracks near BNSF's engine house in Denver, just to see how things change over time. newer GE power dominates the scene on this chilly November afternoon.

Even though BNSF's "New Image" scheme has been around for nearly ten years now, you can still find a fair number of C44-9Ws (in the 1000-series) that wear the "Heritage" scheme. The scheme, and the "Heritage 2" scheme, were both developed as tributes to the Great Northern, one of the original railroads that merged to form Burlington Northern.

With the recent surge in the rail industry, Class 1 railroads have been pulling out all the stops and reactivating older power. BNSF activated (and renumbered) their SD75Ms and SD75Is, the majority of which still wear the Warbonnet scheme. One such example is BNSF 205 (which, until recently, was BNSF 8205), seen here in Denver on a cold final day in November.

This northbound BNSF manifest is just starting its journey on recently laid tracks just north of Utah Junction. In the background, you can see a new commuter rail bridge which is nearing construction. The commuter rail will serve the "Gold Line", running from Union Station in Denver out to Arvada and Wheat Ridge northwest of Denver. The track is also passing underneath UP's North Yard Bypass tracks (primarily used by coal trains). Up and to the right, you can see UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub mainline and North Yard siding.

This northbound manifest sports a very colorful consist as it charges north at track speed through Westminster. The train is just about to pass underneath 92nd Avenue in Westminster. With no southbounds nearby, the train has a warrant to Longs Peak north of Longmont!

Far from home, this CSX C40-8W is putting in some power sharing miles as it heads north on BNSF's Front Range Sub. This is the first C40-8W that I've seen (well, at least shot) in nearly six years. Highlighting the fact that older power is being utilized as much as possible by railroads right now.

Being a rather cold and gloomy day, black and white felt appropriate for this shot as a northbound BNSF manifest passes by a lone tree near recently constructed apartments and condos.

A northbound BNSF manifest approaches the Northwest Parkway underpass in Broomfield, not far south of Louisville. The apartment and condo complex in the background is very new. Ten years ago, none of that had been built and that area was occupied by an empty field.
