At the north siding switch of Broomfield, a BNSF crew has UP's ZDVSC (Denver, CO to Salt Lake City, UT) daily intermodal train moving quickly north. Typically, this train departs Denver between 4am and 5am and typically, of course, it runs on UP's Greeley Sub. But a derailment the previous night still had the line closed and UP needed to run the Z-Train. Many railfans were hoping that UP might decide to single-stack the containers and run the train via the Moffat (as the Moffat cannot support double stacks). Or at least run the TOFC cars via the Moffat. Instead, this equally rare shot was produced. BNSF allowed UP to run the Z-Trains on the Front Range Sub between Denver and Cheyenne. This northbound Z-Train would meet the southbound ZLADV at Longs Peak! I was able to get this shot with the last few remnants of light as the sun had already set behind the Rockies.

You can almost still smell the fresh paint! GE's Tier-4 compliant engines just started showing up toward the end of 2015. The standard model is designated the ET44AC. BNSF has chosen to order a variant on that model and, thus far, has exclusively received the ET44C4. Rather than being C-C trucks, these have A1A-A1A trucks, same as the ES44C4 before them.

My daughter Jaina came with me on this particular afternoon to check out action on the Front Range Sub. The conductor saw her with a camera and gave a friendly wave. You may notice the second unit has a bit of a different look to it. This is the first production ET44C4 I've seen! The ET44C4 is GE's Tier 4 compliant engine and, at the time of this photo, the only (new) locomotive legal to sell in the United States.
