Just south of Castle Rock along I-25 (which can just barely be seen to the right), this southbound BNSF coal load is working hard with a pair of SD70ACe's on the point.

Not quite Halloween yet, but that isn't stopping the white stuff from falling along I-25 just south of Castle Rock. A BNSF coal load makes good time up the 2% grade as it nears Tomah Road.

Two SD70MACs server as the tail-end DPU on this southbound BNSF coal load. Perhaps the most famous of Colorado's numerous 14,000-foot mountain peaks, Pikes Peak stands in the distance. The highway to the left is I-25.

A bit of an artsy shot looking north up the west rail of Main One at a southbound coal load. The train was still over a mile away when I snapped this shot! The beauty of telephoto.

The town of Castle Rock is in the process of running Plum Creek Parkway west underneath the southbound main of the Joint Line. The problem is that there isn't yet an "underneath" for the road to follow! You can just barely see the new rail bridge that is being built to the right of the power in this shot. For now, the train runs on the dirt that has yet to be dug out.

Most shots along the Joint Line south of Castle Rock are on Main 1 on the west side of I-25...for good reason! The lighting is great there almost any time of day. So, I decided to try out a shot of a northbound on Main 2 on the east side of I-25. The lighting isn't nearly as good, but you get a nice view of Pikes Peak!

For this shot, I slowed down the shutter a bit to capture the streaking snow (rather than freeze the individual flakes). BNSF 5614 is actually a manned helper based at Big Lift. The unit tied on to the train there and will remain on for the trip to Palmer Lake.

This southbound coal load is slowing to a stop along the I-25 frontage road south of Castle Rock. A train ahead had a near miss with a car at a grade crossing had to put the train in emergency. As a result, this train will be sitting for awhile!

On December-Eve, a substantial storm moved into the area of the Palmer Divide and brought...well...the picture probably speaks for itself! A coal load works hard south of Castle Rock, pulling toward the top of the hill at Palmer Lake.

Ever had one of those situations when you are caught off guard and completely surprised by what you see! Such was the case for me when I saw a headlight on the horizon on Main One. I was heading north on the I-25 Frontage Road (just south of Castle Rock). Upon seeing the headlight, I pulled over to get some shots, expecting a coal train. Much to my surprise, there was only a single ES44AC headed south! Not even sure exactly where it was off to...

Sometimes train photography is about more than just the train. This cactus caught my eye, as well as the rapidly collapsing code line. I setup for this wide angle shot to try to incorporate all aspects of the scene into the frame.

The entire coal train can be seen in this shot as five units (three on the point and two on the rear) lead the train south. This train was loaded on the Utah Railway near Helper, UT. The coal is headed for the new GCC cement plant near Pueblo.

An ES44AC and a AC4400CW lead up this 120-car coal load as the train slowly makes it way up the 1.5% grade on Main One at Castle Rock. BNSF typically places four units (two on the point and two on the rear) on its coal train on the Joint Line and this train is no exception. The train is crawling along at 11 MPH!

To make sure the Governor's Special made the best time possible, the train was run south on Main 2 between Littleton and Palmer Lake. The train was making great time just south of Castle Rock as it was about to pass underneath Plum Creek Parkway.

The town of Castle Rock is preparing to widen I-25 through the town from four lanes (two each way) to six lanes. It has been rumored that one of the results of the project may be the relcation of the southbound main through a portion of the town. This nice curve (south west of the town itself) may not be there with the completion of the highway project!
