Being a diesel brat, I was particularly sad to see that UP is getting rid of UP 6936, a DDA40X and largest diesel locomotive ever produced. It has been inoperable since 2017, and it appears UP no longer wishes to deal with its mechanical issues. Fortunately, the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum has said they intend to repair it and bring it back to operational condition.

UP 3985, the 4-6-6-4 Challenger steam engine has been sitting in the roundhouse in Cheyenne, inoperable, since 2010. Many people speculated that UP's restoration of 4014, the Big Boy, might spell the end of the Challengers time on UP's roster. Turns out that has prove to be true as it is on it's way to it's new home with the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL.

UP 5716 leads an eastbound hospital train toward the east end of the yard in Cheyenne. The term "hospital train" is given to a train whose purpose is to move equipment off the property for the last time. Many such items are leaving the UP on this train as UP has donated a lot of equipment to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL. First up behind UP 5716 is UP 3985, the 4-6-6-4 Challenger steam locomotive.

UP worked with ALCO to design and create the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy in the early 1940s to run on trains between Green River, WY and Ogden, UT without having to "double head" (run two steam engines instead of one) the trains. 25 Big Boys were built and delivered between 1941 and 1944 and they ran in service until 1959. After starting between Green River, WY and Ogden, UT, they were later moved to Cheyenne and ran on trains primarily between Cheyenne, WY and Laramie, WY over Sherman Hill. 60 years after leaving service, UP 4014 steams again as it departs west with a special to head toward Sherman Hill.

After missing the first two runs of UP 4014, I was able to make it up to Cheyenne for the third run as the Big Boy departed west on a passenger special. The train will spend two months touring the UP system.

An eastbound manifest sits at a red signal at CP W511 on Main 2. The train is waiting for the Cheyenne Frontier Days steam train, which will cross over from Main 1 to Main 3 CP W511. To expedite things, UP sent a fresh crew out to this train so, once clear, the train could continue east.

For awhile, it looked as though the Cheyenne Frontier Days steam train would be delayed departing Cheyenne. This was due to the buckets of rain that were coming down. UP did not want somebody to slip and get injured on the platform, so passengers would not be loaded until the rain let up. Fortunately, while it had not fully stopped, it had let up enough to allow passengers to board. UP 844 is steaming up and getting ready to depart in about 15 minutes.

I do not claim to understand the details of how steam engines work. My elementary understanding stops at "fire is created to boil water to create steam to drive pistons". Periodically, a certain amount of water must be dumped via a valve underneath the cab.
