At Ulster Street - also the former and possibly future location of Sandown Junction - this westbound coal empty has received word from 36th Street that the train can run around the wye at the yard and move toward the Belt Industrial Lead and the Bypass Track at North Yard.

This is a scene that UP would stop tomorrow, if it were possible. This train is coming out of 36th Street on the Limon Subdivision. UP hopes that in the not-to-distant future, the CRIP (Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific) line between the Belt Industrial Lead and Sandown Junction will be restored. If and when that happens, coal trains will no longer traverse this section of track.

This train was loaded at the Energy Coal Mine on the Craig Branch in the Colorado high country. Here, the train is coming off the Belt Industrial Lead toward 36th Street, where it will make a sharp left turn and head east on the Limon Subdivision.

This unit tie train, led by two warbonnets, is on the approach to Utah Junction. The train is about to pass underneath the three-year-old Belt Flyover. There is a westbound UP coal empty sitting on Bypass One with a sole DPU on the end.

Nearing the end of its long run, this southbound manifest cleared its warrant and thanked the dispatcher for a good run from Cheyenne to Denver! Meanwhile, I was thanking BNSF for selecting such nice power for the trip south.

Two SD75s (the leader an SD75I and the trailer an SD75M) lead this unit tie train into Denver off the Front Range Sub. The first car - the empty flat - is there as a buffer car between the power and the unit train.

All twenty of the SD90MACs (with a true 6000 HP prime mover) that UP still has on its roster were in storage at Burnham - in one long line - at the end of 2007. Who knows if these units will ever be reactivated, or if they perished soon after the inception, similar to the U50 about thirty years ago.

Starting in 1997, Union Pacific took delivery of 21 SD90MACs with 4-cylinder, 6000 HP prime movers. Roughly a decade later finds 20 of these 21 units in storage, not being used. The 21st unit has been returned to EMD for testing purposes. One of the 20 units in storage, UP 8923 (ex-UP 8513) is seen at Burnham in Denver.

One of the newest additions to UP's roster - ES44AC #5298 - leads this southbound MNPNY at Hazeltine. The train is just finishing up a meet with its counterpart, the MNYNP, and is now waiting for a second northbound before it will "get the nod" from DS-86 to continue toward North Yard.

There is a nice long-lens shot offered at the east end of Mesa. The east end of Mesa is on quite a hill, and trains crest the hill from the west, appearing (seemingly) from out of nowhere! Snow has definitely found its way to the mountain peaks of the Continental Divide.

The Kansas Pacific (KP) Line - UP's Limon Subdivision - sees a lot of coal traffic. Most of the coal that comes off the Moffat runs on the KP. So, it is nice when something like a unit auto train comes rolling through every once in awhile! This empty auto train is on the move in between Sable and Mesa, heading east.

This is where it all begins...the Joint Line between Denver and Pueblo. Even though BNSF owns the tracks here at 20th Street, this is where UP and BNSF come together for the start of 119 mile journey to Pueblo. UP 5984 - a UP coal load - is about to begin that journey!

Yes, both of these train are indeed moving. And yes, they are moving toward each other...fortunately, the BNSF local on the left is about to hit a switch at 20th Street that will take it to the right and into BNSF's yard. The UP coal load is coming out of North Yard, and will hold for the local to clear.

I don't care who you are, you have to admit that this unit looks very strange. The unit was built as a GP30, but it has been rebuilt as a GP39E by BNSF. Since being a GP30, the smaller (center) radiator fan has been completed removed. Even more odd, the classic rounded GP30 cab has been replaced with the square spartan cab EMD used on subsequent model (until the wide-cab anyway).

Just north of BNSF's 31st Street Yard in Denver, a single ES44DC is in charge of a baretable train - a long strand of empty TOFC cars - headed for Rennicks Yard. The train is slowing on the approach to the north end of the yard, running parallel to Brighton Blvd.
