Belt Industrial Lead (UP)

A UP manifest is entering North Yard from the Belt Industrial Lead. Not sure where this manifest is coming from, but there are a few possibilities. Most likely is that it is either the MCYNY (coming from Cheyenne, WY), or the MNPNY (coming from North Platte, NE). Here at Utah Junction, the train crosses BNSF's "New North Main" that runs to Cheyenne, and the Moffat mainline.

So close and yet so far away! UP 1996 and three other units lead Union Pacific's MNYGR. The train is currently picking up its DPU back in north yard. A utility crew is getting its air hose, etc hooked up. If the train were three or four cars shorter, Washington Street would have been cleared. Alas, traffic is going to have to wait a bit longer. While most motorists are probably not railfans, perhaps a few note the uniquely painted Espee heritage unit leading the train!

The Belt Industrial Lead, which is only four miles long, is often time a bit of a bottleneck in the Denver area. It connects North Yard to 36th Street Yard, the Limon Sub, and the Greeley Sub. The line also has numerous switches and industries that are regularly switched by a yard job. Since it is a single track main, one train can stop several others. At the moment, this MNYGR is slowing to a stop to pick up its DPU, way back in North Yard.

Manifests departing North Yard for the Greeley Sub frequently have to "double over" in the yard, meaning their train cannot fit on a single yard track, and instead is on two (or even more) tracks. The UP crew on the head end here is waiting at a red signal at CP DS900 (Broadway). The train must pull into the OS at Broadway in order to clear the needed yard switch at the back end. The problem is that a North Yard Switch Job is on the Belt Main, headed for Bypass 2, so the train here cannot go anywhere.
