In Colorado, the weather can shift from Summer to Winter overnight...literally! 24 hours before this picture was taken, it was 75 degrees out. On this day, the mercury in the thermometer didn't get over 30. UP's LDJ03 is switching on the main at Roydale.

The second picture I added to the website was taken on January 12, 2002 and it was of DRGW 3111. Six years later and that same unit was found switching on the Roydale Local (the LDJ03) at Roydale. Looks a bit different from six years ago...

Can you say blowing snow / white out conditions? A westbound coal empty approaches the west switch of Mesa on UP's Limon Subdivision in Aurora. Temperatures fell nearly 50 degrees overnight and this March blizzard settled into the area.

A westbound coal empty - the CCSSM-24 - is passing milepost 634 on UP's KP Line. The train is approaching the former (and possibly future) location of Sandown Junction. It was here that the Rock Island would leave the KP Line to head for the Belt Line and connect with DRGW.

A single DPU C44AC-CTE brings up the rear of a coal empty headed for Bypass 1 at North Yard. The train is headed for the Somerset Mine on the North Fork Branch south of Grand Junction.

Getting close to the end of its journey across the plains, this UP coal empty is crossing Steele Street approaching the Yard Limits at 36th Street. A sign of the weather in the last 24 hours is on the side of the unit...ice is draped off the running boards of the lead unit!

After completing its switching work at Roydale, the LDJ03 is headed back toward 36th Street. The train is moving at restricted speed as it is following a coal empty into the yard using a box 4 and a box 11 on its track warrant. The local is passing the switching yard at Monaco Street. GMTX 2678 is a leaser of Baltimore & Ohio heritage.

One of the newest units on UP's roster, UP 7799 was the last ES44AC delivered to Union Pacific in 2007. It came out of the General Electric shops in Erie, PA in October 2007. The unit is on tap to run as the power on the MDVSI-02 later in the evening.

As my daughter would say, they are going to put BNSF 6393 "into the garage" for a little work! The 6393 is dead and BNSF 2928 is shoving it back.

This shot pretty much sums up the weather for the day! There wasn't a lot of snowfall, but the wind was really bad and it blew snow around all over and on everything.

Of the 279 AC4400CW's originally purchased by Southern Pacific, only 17 are left unpatched (as of this picture). It is becoming increasingly hard to find one, and I was lucky to have stumbled across SP 319 as the second unit on the CNANX-01. The train came from the North Antelope Mine and is now waiting for its crew near Fox Junction. It is ultimately headed for the Nixon power plant near Colorado Springs.
