This particular GP38-3 is a rebuild of a GP38-2. Until recently, it wore a similar blue paint scheme, but was owned by EMD Leasing (EMDX). The unit was delivered to Missouri-Kansas-Texas as MKT 185. In this case, the grinder made it about 2 1/2 miles before it had to clear for a coal load. The train is moving toward the camera in this image. The water being sprayed will help soak things to reduce the risk of a fire. Note the smoke coming further back, a result of the actual grinding. Note the flaps with the number hanging down alongside the base of the cars. The flaps help to keep sparks from flying away from the train. At switches (or other locations with trackside obstructions, the grinding ceases and the flaps rise up, allowing the train to proceed without causing damage to the trackside equipment, or the train itself. Smoke pours off the three cars responsible for grinding. Rail grinding smooths down the surface of the rail head, helping to extend the life of the rail. The train operates in a push-pull fashion to track that needs a second run can be easily accessed. On May 17, 2006, BNSF 8814 was the lead unit on the C-ATMSUD0-93 15 miles east of Alliance, NE. The train was moving along at 38 MPH when it rear ended a train that was stopped ahead of it. Here, UP has two main tracks that head south. One heads for the Joint Line and the other collides with BNSF tracks at Prospect Junction and lead to Union Station.
