The spreader was used to clear Tennessee Pass after major snow storms. Today, it is stored in North Yard and is only used once every couple of years on average. The plow will help dig through some snow drifts on the plains to help rescue some crews that are actually trapped on their trains, stuck in the snow. Although the plow itself is powered by diesel-electric, there is still a steam-powered heat system to make sure all the equipment remains defrosted! Close to three hours of slow orders in between Reno, NV and Salt Lake City, UT currently cause Number 6 to regularly run anywhere between three and six hours late by the time they reach Denver.
