A look at the nose of P42DC AMTK 78. You can definitely see the years of age on the face of the unit, with various scratches, dents, and scuffs. The unit was delivered in June 1997.

The morning Zephyr is sitting on Track 4 at Union Station for its standard morning station stop. The train arrived 40 minutes early, and is expected to depart right on time. AMTK 341, an ALC-42 "Charger", sits on Track 5. Amtrak has ordered 125 of these of Siemens-built units, and they are still being delivered.

One of two Sleeping Cars (not including the Transition Sleeper) sits on Track 4 at Denver Union Station on the westbound California Zephyr. The first round of Superliner were delivered to Amtrak between 1979 and 1981, so this Superliner is right around 45 years old.

An empty oil train just received a light at C&S Junction on Bypass to head west on the Moffat. The crew is starting the journey to Bond, where there will be a crew change to then take the train on the Grand Junction. Without changing tracks, the train is moving from Bypass 2 to Main 1, ready to cross over Federal Blvd.

It is a little difficult to tell from this view, but the engineer has flipped on the headlights on UP 7634. The brakes are being released and the engineer has notched the unit into Run 1 to start creeping west. The unit is on the point of an empty oil train, ready to head west and tackle the Moffat.

A westbound oil train is sitting on Bypass 2, presently facing a red signal at C&S Junction. Indeed, you can see the signal the crew is looking at on the signal bridge, right over the track. In just a minute, this signal will turn green and the train will depart west.

A pair of units sit on the tail end of a westbound oil train. These DPUs will assist the 6,600 foot train on the journey west to Utah. And, perhaps more importantly, on the journey east.

An SD40N and a GP40-2 sit paired together in North Yard. The units have been used on the South Local lately, which runs south on the Joint Line a couple of days a week. At the moment, they are idling, waiting for their next assignment.

This GP38-2 was originally delivered to Missouri Pacific in February 1980 (as MP 2195). One pretty reliable tip that this unit was originally Missouri Pacific is the lack of dynamic brakes. Missouri Pacific and Katy (MKT), both plains railroads, had quite a few units without dynamic brakes. This saved money in the initial purchase and in maintenance costs.

It is currently the middle of the "off season" for the Rocky Mountaineer. Three of the units are over in North Yard, likely waiting for some maintenance to be done before the new season kicks off next April.

This C44ACM is sporting UP's newest paint scheme, without a large flag on the long hood and without nose wings. The unit was recently rebuilt from the AC4400CW it was delivered to UP as in February 2001. The unit will be power on the MNYNP, manifest from North Yard to North Platte.

This snoot-nose SD40N is waiting to head to North Platte, NE, probably for its 92-day FRA inspection. This particular unit was originally delivered in March 1975. This unit has spent its entire life in yellow and gray paint, as it was indeed originally delivered to UP.

UP 1983 is the UP heritage unit I have captured the least. I was happy I had the chance to get a few shots on this December afternoon as the unit sat in North Yard, waiting to head to North Platte, NE. Hard to believe that it has been nearly 20 years since the UP heritage fleet was unveiled.

One of UP's six heritage units, the Western Pacific unit (UP 1983) was hanging out in North Yard this afternoon. The unit cannot be run on a train as its 92-day FRA inspection is due. The unit will be transported (dead-in-consist) to North Platte so its 92-day inspection can be completed again.
