While coal has almost entirely disappeared from the Moffat, UP still runs the occasional coal train from the North Fork Branch east over the Moffat. Here, a 95-car coal load rolls east through the OS at C&S Jct, entering Bypass 2. The outbound crew is coming out of North Yard right now and will meet the train at Pecos.

It is a little difficult to tell from this view, but the engineer has flipped on the headlights on UP 7634. The brakes are being released and the engineer has notched the unit into Run 1 to start creeping west. The unit is on the point of an empty oil train, ready to head west and tackle the Moffat.

A westbound oil train is sitting on Bypass 2, presently facing a red signal at C&S Junction. Indeed, you can see the signal the crew is looking at on the signal bridge, right over the track. In just a minute, this signal will turn green and the train will depart west.

The outbound crew on this empty oil train are sitting on Bypass 2, ready to take the train west on the Moffat. Maintenance of Way is working on one of the crossovers at C&S Junction. The maintenance worker informed DS-378 that he would be clear within ten minutes.

In the OS at C&S Junction, this westbound BNSF oil train is crossing over Clear Creek on Main 2. A visitor from the north is second out on the train. Of course, in the coming years, that paint scheme will eventually train be changed to the new CPKC scheme after the merger of Canadian Pacific and KCS.

At C&S Junction, a westbound BNSF oil train with six units on the point is changed from Main 3 to Main 2 (without actually changing tracks) as the number of tracks filters down from four to two. The crew was on duty at 9am and started pulling out of the yard right around 9:30am.

A pair of GEs were removed from the tail end of an eastbound loaded oil train on Bypass 2 are headed for North Yard. They will pull west on Main 1 to clear the signal at C&S, then get a light to cross over to Main 2 and the North Yard siding to head back east. In the distance, you can just see the tail end of the westbound Zephyr on Main 2. One additional note of interest...UP 6345 was original SP 296!

An SD70ACe is being added to the pair of ES44ACs that are currently on a westbound oil train on Bypass 1. After getting the unit added, waiting for the Zephyr, and performing an air test, the oil train will be ready to head west. In the distance, you can see the tail end of an eastbound oil load that arrived a few hours earlier. That power will be removed from the train before it departs east for the KP.

The conductor on this single SD70ACe looks out the window as the unit backs across Federal Blvd on Main 1. The unit will be added to the point of a westbound empty oil train. A few years ago, UP laid off all of the engine hostlers in Denver. These hostlers would make sure power changes like this were done before the road crew showed up. Now, the road crew is responsible for doing all these power shuffling activities before departing the yard.

A single UP SD70ACe sits on Main 1 just west of the signals at the C&S Junction. Before unit trains (mostly oil trains these days, coal trains in the past) head west on the Moffat, UP frequently will do a little power shuffling. Often times adding a unit to a train that came off the relatively flat plains before it heads into the Rockies. Such is the case here as this SD70ACe is waiting for authority from DS-378 to back east onto the point of a westbound oil train, just barely visible way off in the distance. This shot also demonstrates how long the OS at C&S Junction is. It must be one of the longest anywhere, as it is roughly 1/2 a mile between switches!

It is a reasonably pleasant November morning here at C&S Junction as the westbound Zephyr crosses Federal Blvd on Main 2. It is around 50°F outside, and slowly warming up. It may be the last temperate day for awhile as, starting tomorrow, there is at least a 40% chance for snow all the way until next Sunday.

The morning Zephyr passes underneath the signal bridge at C&S Junction. The Zephyr is running right on time as it charges west on Main 3 (changing to Main 2 here at C&S). Four tracks collapse down to just two when heading westbound here at C&S. The four tracks, from left-to-right, are Bypass (Main) 1, Bypass (Main) 2, Main 3, and the North Yard Siding. The two tracks in the foreground, from left-to-right, are Main 1 and Main 2.

After a layover in Denver on Bypass 1 at North Yard, UP 1943 and its empty westbound oil train is departing on Main 1 at C&S Junction. The four tracks east of C&S Junction, from left to right, are Bypass 1, Bypass 2, Main 3, and the North Yard Siding. At C&S Junction, when heading west, these filter down to just two tracks. From left to right, we have Main 1 and Main 2.
