This northbound BNSF manifest is just starting its journey on recently laid tracks just north of Utah Junction. In the background, you can see a new commuter rail bridge which is nearing construction. The commuter rail will serve the "Gold Line", running from Union Station in Denver out to Arvada and Wheat Ridge northwest of Denver. The track is also passing underneath UP's North Yard Bypass tracks (primarily used by coal trains). Up and to the right, you can see UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub mainline and North Yard siding.

With the recent surge in the rail industry, Class 1 railroads have been pulling out all the stops and reactivating older power. BNSF activated (and renumbered) their SD75Ms and SD75Is, the majority of which still wear the Warbonnet scheme. One such example is BNSF 205 (which, until recently, was BNSF 8205), seen here in Denver on a cold final day in November.

Even though BNSF's "New Image" scheme has been around for nearly ten years now, you can still find a fair number of C44-9Ws (in the 1000-series) that wear the "Heritage" scheme. The scheme, and the "Heritage 2" scheme, were both developed as tributes to the Great Northern, one of the original railroads that merged to form Burlington Northern.

A couple times a year, I like to grab a shot of the engine tracks near BNSF's engine house in Denver, just to see how things change over time. newer GE power dominates the scene on this chilly November afternoon.

Ten years ago, the C44-9W (AKA Dash 9-44CW) was king of BNSF's roster. They had more of these on the roster than any other model. Today, the ES44DC and ES44AC (including the ES44C4) reign king. Good to see the paint scheme still in pretty great shape here on BNSF 4078.

This scene shows another example of the large amounts of construction. The bridge and track this coal load is on was here five years ago. The other bridges and three tracks were not. Once activated, UP will have two main tracks here, both controlled by CTC (instead of the track warrants the currently control it). The two rails in the background are commuter rail tracks that will be activated in 2016.

Just as on the northwest side of Denver, there is a lot of construction going on along the east side as well. Commuter rails are being constructed between Denver Union Station and Denver International Airport. Much of the commuter rail trackage parallels UPs Limon Sub. UP is also adding a second main track for several miles as well as CTC to part of the Limon Sub. Here, a UP coal load heads east on what will become Main 1 once the second main is brought in to service.

After a fair amount of rain in the last two days, this reflective shot of a westbound manifest was made possible. BNSF has been aggressively buying ES44C4s very aggressively. They have nearly 1000 on their roster now. The ES44C4 only has four powered axles. It is an A1A-A1A unit. BNSF 6550 happens to be one such unit.

While waiting for an eastbound coal load to depart Bypass 2, I noticed a westbound BNSF manifest slow rolling by the oil refinery on the Brush Sub. So, I drove along Brighton Blvd and set up for this shot.

Yard Shots Denver Rock Island
While looking around Denver for something to shoot, I stumbled across this Denver Rock Island switcher. The Denver Rock Island is a private short line that switches several industrial parks. They have eight units, including this former Espee SW1500.

I really like this particular shot as I feel that there is a lot of great stuff captured in it. First off, of course, is the fact that Amtrak is still running (for the time being) in 2014! Coors Field, a year away from its 20th birthday, stands on the left side of the shot. 20th Street, which use to leave Denver on a raised viaduct, now descends underneath the tracks. And, of course, there is Denver's skyline in the background!

Transportation explosion! While it make not be passenger trains in the traditional sense, commuter trains will be coming to Union Station in 2016. The two tracks on the left side of this shot will be for the commuter rail that will run 23 miles east to Denver International Airport. The two tracks on the right side of the shot will run just over 11 miles northwest to Arvada and Wheat Ridge. The two tracks in the middle are for non-commuter trains such as Amtrak.

A good elevated look at the new Train Hall at Union Station, as well as a lot of the recent Urban development surrounding the station. A four hour late California Zephyr is pulling out of the station on Track 4, ready to head west. Note the private car parked at the tail end of Track 5 to the right of the Zephyr.

Here is a shot that is drastically different from what you would have seen a few years earlier! Take a peek at the ninth picture that I added to my website, taken from close to the same perspective back in April 2002!
