It is a beautiful spring day on the eastern Colorado plains. 24 hours after taking this picture, the scene would be radically different, covered in snow, as a spring blizzard moves in overnight. This train originated from Eagle Pass, TX and is heading to Cheyenne Wells, a city about 18 miles west of the Kansas border.

An AC4400CW with a fairly fresh coat of paint, sporting some wings on the nose, rounds the bend near the west end of Cedar Point. This siding, which is under 5,000 feet long, really is not even a siding anymore after UP removed the east switch a few years ago. It is now a stub train just under 5,000 feet in length.

An eastbound unit grain empty, heading for Cheyenne Wells, has climbed up to Cedar Point from Buick and is now starting the decent down toward Limon.

This eastbound coal train through a monkey wrench in UP's afternoon operation. As you can see, the train broke in to two. The conductor walked back and set the brakes on 30 cars before walking the rest of the train. Meanwhile, the engineer had to isolate the rear DPU. When the conductor walked back up, the train was put back together and the brakes were knocked off. Then, the engineer brought the rear DPU online and recharged the brakes. The entire process took several hours. There was an 8,000-foot MSIDV out of Limon, but it made a reverse move to Limon as the crew only had 90 minutes to work and the coal train had the line blocked.

An eastbound coal train descends the descent (for the plains) grade located at Cedar Point, about 10 miles west of Limon. This former siding has now been downgraded to a very long stub track! If you look closely, you may notice that there is no switch with the main track in the distance. The track just comes to an end. UP removed the switch a few years ago. On this beautiful afternoon, a single SD70ACe brings up the tail end of the train.

One location on the Limon Sub that offers up some good shots throughout most of the day is Cedar Point. This siding is about 10 miles west of Limon, CO. And, in fact, it really is not even a siding anymore. It is a 4,800-foot-long stub track! UP actually removed the east switch of the siding, and it can only be accessed from the west end now. Here, a coal train descends downgrade as it crosses over said west switch.

Moving along at track speed west of Agate, got a bit of a pan shot of UP 1983. Along with the Rio Grande heritage unit, the Western Pacific wears the best-looking paint scheme of the six (in my opinion). Hard to believe it has been over 10 years since this heritage unit was first unveiled!

Union Pacific's heritage units do not grace the Denver-Metro area too often these days. However, the Western Pacific heritage unit made a quick swing through Denver in June 2016. It picked up a blade train in Greeley and then headed east on the KP toward Kansas and points beyond.

A profile shot of the Western Pacific heritage unit as it crosses a short bridge several minutes west of Agate. UP 1983 led a windmill blade train east on the KP early in the morning.
