The train is the last non-grain, non-Limon Local train that will be on the KP line for the foreseeable future. The autoracks are going in to storage on the main at Jim, along with two other strings of autoracks that will be stored on both the main and siding at Jim, blocking the KP as a through route. If you look very closely in the top-right portion of the picture, you will see hat Cedar Point has in fact had its east switch removed and it is now a (roughly) 5,000-foot-long stub track, occasionally used for storage. This train originated from Eagle Pass, TX and is heading to Cheyenne Wells, a city about 18 miles west of the Kansas border. This siding, which is under 5,000 feet long, really is not even a siding anymore after UP removed the east switch a few years ago. It is now a stub train just under 5,000 feet in length. As you can see, the train broke in to two. The conductor walked back and set the brakes on 30 cars before walking the rest of the train. Meanwhile, the engineer had to isolate the rear DPU. When the conductor walked back up, the train was put back together and the brakes were knocked off. Then, the engineer brought the rear DPU online and recharged the brakes. The entire process took several hours. There was an 8,000-foot MSIDV out of Limon, but it made a reverse move to Limon as the crew only had 90 minutes to work and the coal train had the line blocked. This former siding has now been downgraded to a very long stub track! If you look closely, you may notice that there is no switch with the main track in the distance. The track just comes to an end. This siding is about 10 miles west of Limon, CO. And, in fact, it really is not even a siding anymore. It is a 4,800-foot-long stub track! UP actually removed the east switch of the siding, and it can only be accessed from the west end now. Here, a coal train descends downgrade as it crosses over said west switch. Along with the Rio Grande heritage unit, the Western Pacific wears the best-looking paint scheme of the six (in my opinion). However, the Western Pacific heritage unit made a quick swing through Denver in June 2016. It picked up a blade train in Greeley and then headed east on the KP toward Kansas and points beyond.
