A longer-than-normal Zephyr (13 cars, compared to 9) heads east along I-70 in western Colorado. The train will pass through the town of New Castle before entering the west end of Glenwood Canyon. Because the train can go 79 MPH here, it would not be possible to catch up to the train again until Glenwood Springs.

The trees and grass are really starting to green up here at the start of May as the Eastbound Zephyr flies by at 79 MPH as it approaches a connector road that connects US-6 and the I-70 Frontage Road (across I-70).

The profile of the Eastbound Zephyr looks a little different today! That is because the train has a quartet of Amtrak California cars on the headend. While I do not know for sure where they were headed, I would speculate they are going to Beech Grove, IN. Amtrak has its main maintenance facility here.

The eastbound Zephyr accelerates up toward the posted trackspeed of 79 MPH as it is just east of the control point of Parachute (visible in the shot). This control point leads to a small BNSF yard that was once used for soda ash trains out of the plant at Parachute. Beyond that is the siding of Grand Valley, so named for this grand (and wide) valley the tracks run through here.

The California Zephyr follows the Colorado River for just over 230 miles in both Utah and Colorado. Here, the mighty river spans across the spectacular Glenwood Canyon as the eastbound Zephyr glides by on the main track at Grizzly.

After completing its station stop in Glenwood Springs, the eastbound Zephyr is on the move again on the main track at Grizzly. Grizzly is one of three sidings located within the splendor of Glenwood Canyon. The other two sidings are Shoshone and Allen.

Just east of the siding of Chacra, the eastbound California Zephyr crosses over the Colorado River to move from the north side of the river to the south side. It will remain on the south side of the river until it east of Dotsero.

A C44-9W (of Espee heritage...formerly SP 8120) and an SD40N (recently rebuilt by UP from an SD40-2) head east down the main at Grizzly in a snow-filled Glenwood Canyon. The train is headed for Gypsum (on the far west end of Tennessee Pass) where it will switch out American Gypsum, a wallboard plant.

After spending about three hours switching in the yard in Glenwood Springs, UP's Minturn Local is now headed east toward Tennessee Pass. Now that statement sounds far more exciting that it actually is. While most of Tennessee Pass is "railbanked" and out of service, about seven miles of the west end is still active. The stretch between Dotsero and Gypsum is still active, which is to say it sees one train a week: The Minturn Local. American Gypsum is a wallboard manufacturer located in Gypsum and they ship by rail. A (far less common than its AC brothers) C44-9W leads the local on the main at Grizzly.

A single DPU brings up the tail end of an eastbound MRONYX (Manifest, Roper, UT to North Yard, CO, Extra) at Shoshone in Glenwood Canyon. At 3,960 feet, the siding of Shoshone is rarely used. The east end of Shoshone is separated by the west end of Allen by only a few hundred feet (and a tunnel). Rio Grande considered connecting Allen and Shoshone to create a stretch of two main tracks, but the expense of removing the tunnel proved to be too much to make it worth it.

This is a spot in Glenwood Canyon that I have never shot before. This eastbound manifest is at the west switch of Shoshone along the Colorado River. Prior to 1992, drivers in Glenwood Canyon passed this location on the two lane I-70. Once the expansion of I-70 to four lanes was completed (through the mountain behind the tracks, in this case), this area became a rest stop and access to the Glenwood Canyon trailhead. Because it is on the north side of the mountain, very little sunlight hits here, meaning the Colorado River is frozen over!

One of the most awe-inspiring places in the world simply must be Glenwood Canyon. Even more so in winter when it is covered in snow. Amid the sheer rock walls and Colorado River, an eastbound manifest approaches a clear signal at the east switch of Grizzly.

UP typically does not run a manifest between Roper, UT and North Yard, CO on Sundays. However, it seems there was enough traffic to demand it on the second third Sunday of 2016. A day later, the MRONYX (The "X" indicating it is an extra, unscheduled run of the train) heads west on the main at Grizzly about four miles east of Glenwood Springs.
