AMTK 184, the Phase IV Heritage Unit, leads the westbound Zephyr out of the west switch of Winter Park on a crystal clear morning in the Colorado Rockies. US-40 is the highway to the left, which comes over the Continental Divide via Berthoud Pass.

I was never a huge fan on Amtrak's Phase IV paint scheme, but that doesn't mean it isn't cool seeing the Phase IV Heritage Unit leading the westbound Zephyr! Here, the train is making its station stop at Fraser on the main track. The engineer just gave a blast on the horn, telling passenger that stepped off to stretch their legs that it is time to get back onboard.

The siding at Tabernash is a very interesting one. The siding makes a sharp curve to the left (when heading west) and there is a very large separation between siding at main. This is because there is a wye here and, at one point, this where helpers were station to cut in to heavy eastbound trains for the final shove up to the Moffat Tunnel. Today, the Zephyr glides down the main with AMTK 184 on the point.

A few miles east of Sulphur, the Zephyr is going down grade, following the head waters of the Colorado River. The Zephyr will be following the Colorado River, for the most part, for the next 200 miles or so, through Ruby Canyon in Colorado and Utah.

The Zephyr is moving west through the rather narrow canyon known as Little Gore Canyon. The train has just emerged from Tunnel 39 and is heading for the east portal of Tunnel 40, just ahead of the train out of the frame.

Here at Bond, also known as Orestod, the Zephyr creeps west through a 15 MPH slow order. The slow order is due to the extreme heat and the concern of sun kinks is the rails. The Craig Branch, leading to Energy and Axial mines, peals away from the main line here. The Zephyr changes from the Moffat Tunnel Sub to the Glenwood Springs Sub here as it starts on the Dotsero Cutoff.

The Zephyr rounds a bend and crosses over Tepee Creek, which converges with the Colorado River here. The Zephyr is just a few miles east of the siding of Dell. According to a recent rumor, Dell is one of several sidings UP is considering disconnecting from the main and, at least for the time being, mothballing. This is presumably to save on costs, particularly considering the lack of traffic these days.

The Zephyr is nearing the west end of Red Canyon east of Range. I'm sure that you can determine the source of the canyon's name from this particular shot!

At the west end of the Dotsero Cutoff, you find the small town of Dotsero. Here, the Eagle River, which Tennessee Pass follows for quite awhile, converges with the Colorado River. The Zephyr is crossing over the Eagle River and is in fact passing by the far west end of Tennessee Pass on a beautiful July day.

At the east switch of Glenwood Springs, the Zephyr takes the east siding in order to make its station stop at Glenwood. I had wanted to get a shot of the Zephyr further in Glenwood Canyon, but CDOT had I-70 down to just two lanes, making it impossible to exit or stop.

About 25 miles west of Glenwood Springs, the Zephyr is approaching the east switch of Rifle. Once upon a time, the Rio Grande Zephyr stopped at Rifle. When the Rio Grande Zephyr retired in April 1983 and Amtrak ran the California Zephyr through here, Amtrak's California Zephyr initially stopped at Rifle as well. However, just six months later, in October 1983, Amtrak removed Rifle as a station stop.

East meets west at the siding of Lacy, a few miles west of Rifle. Amazing what a difference a day can make. Yesterday, #5 and #6 met at East Portal, about 170 miles to the east! Then, #5 was almost nine hours late. Today, #5 is on time, but #6 is running about three hours late.

This is a shot that I have wanted to get for years, but never really had the capability to until now. The eastbound Zephyr is passing by stored hoppers in the siding at Chacra. The highway to the left is I-70, which the tracks more-or-less follow between Grand Junction and Dotsero.

While its true that Amtrak is sometimes delayed, it is also true that traveling by car is not always a walk in the park! The eastbound Zephyr gets to proceed into and through Glenwood Canyon while eastbound traffic on I-70 is at a dead standstill. A fire alongside Glenwood Canyon has I-70 shut down at the moment, and traffic isn't going anywhere. Indeed, some people are even getting out of their car and talking with their asphalt neighbors. I'll bet the passengers on Amtrak are enjoying the view as they roll east by the stopped traffic!

The westbound Denver-Provo is on the main track at Glenwood as is passed underneath the signal bridge. Glenwood actually has two siding. The track to the right is the East Siding and the track to the left is the West Siding. The mainline runs down the middle between the two. At the signal bridge, the West Siding ends while the East Siding continues down to the Amtrak Station.
