A few days earlier, an extra P42DC was picked up in Denver. The unit is called a protection unit, and is kept in Denver in the event a unit on the Zephyr develops an issue. One did the day the protection unit was picked up. My best guess is that one of these P42DCs will be dropped off in Denver to serve as the new protection unit. The train emerged from the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel just moments earlier, and is continuing east toward Denver on a clear (green) signal. There is still quite a bit of snow on the ground even in late April. A lot of it being the result of a snow storm that came through the night before. Only later on did I learn that the Zephyr had in fact been annulled, so the manifest has clear signals the rest of the way down the hill. This section of track frequently goes weeks or even months with snow in the winter as it is on the north side of the mountain. There is never direct sunlight here in the winter. UP 7830 and CP 8941 are on the main, leading an eastbound oil train across said bridge. The train is a unit oil train, although you cannot see any tank cars in this shot. The only car visible is a covered hopper, which serves as a buffer car, to protect the power from the oil they are carrying. The snow covered peak in the distance is James Peak. This peak is 13,294 feet above sea level, and the Moffat Tunnel runs nearly underneath the mountain. This road carries quite a bit of traffic year round, as a lot of folks enjoy hiking around the Moffat Tunnel in the summer, and cross country skiing around it in the winter. The sun is so far to the south, the south mountains of the valley block the sun. Fortunately, there is just enough sunlight to light up a UP ES44AC and a CP ES44AC, leading an eastbound loaded oil train across South Boulder Creek.
