At the east switch of East Portal, the eastbound Zephyr rolls on with a trio of P42DCs leading. A few days earlier, an extra P42DC was picked up in Denver. The unit is called a protection unit, and is kept in Denver in the event a unit on the Zephyr develops an issue. One did the day the protection unit was picked up. My best guess is that one of these P42DCs will be dropped off in Denver to serve as the new protection unit. Of note, AMTK 161 (Phase 1 Heritage) is second out on the train.

On the main at Cliff, the tracks cross over South Boulder Creek. UP 7830 and CP 8941 are on the main, leading an eastbound oil train across said bridge. The train is a unit oil train, although you cannot see any tank cars in this shot. The only car visible is a covered hopper, which serves as a buffer car, to protect the power from the oil they are carrying.
