A pair of SD40-2s shove backward against their train as they work to spot about a half dozen cars in one of the tracks just to the east of the upper yard in Golden, on the other side of 44th Avenue.

The Golden Local starts pulling across 44th Avenue and in to the upper yard in Golden. The brakeman, see walking to the right, just aligned the derail that protects cars in the yard, and is now walking back. A handful of cars will be spotted on one of the tracks just east of the yard.

One of the great things about this picture is that there is a certain timelessness about it. While it is true the BNSF letting and scheme date the image somewhat, the fact that SD40-2s are still the power of choice for most yard and local jobs, this could just as easily be 1988 as 2018.

The Golden Switch is descending down a gentle grade on BNSF's Golden Sub, across the bridge at MP 14.23. The train is about done with their daily switching and will be tying up in the yard in Golden, parallel to the Coors Brewing Copy, soon.

After entering in to the upper yard in Golden, a brakeman on BNSF's Golden Switch realigns the derail at the east end of the yard. From here, the crew will tie down their train and call it a day.

BNSF's Golden Switch is crossing 44th Avenue and entering BNSF's upper yard in Golden. In Golden, you'll find a lower yard, which is where the cars to and from Coors go, and an upper yard, which is where the cars along the Golden Sub go that are not destined for Coors. BNSF runs a local out of the Golden to switch industries along the line. The cars are then brought back to the upper yard where a train is built to take them to Denver.

This shot was appropriate for the longest day of the year as it is only in the summer months that the sun is far enough to the north in the evening to light the this side of the train. The train is getting close to the upper yard in Golden.

This is a shot I have wanted to shoot for awhile, but I never seem to be around when a train is inbound...until this day! A pair of SD70MACs approach the bridge at MP 14.23 on BNSF's Golden Sub, headed for the upper yard at Golden.

BNSF's Golden Switch is returning to the upper yard in Golden with two SD70MACs and a dozen cars. The cars have been picked up from industries along the line during the day. The train is just west of Ward Road about two miles away from the yard.

BNSF's upper yard in Golden is protected by a derail. After entering in to the yard limits this brakeman is realigning the derail to the "derail" position. The power will then continue to the yard office and the crew will tie it down for the night.

A pair of SD40-2s crosses 44th Avenue in Golden. The crew has finished their work for the day and they are headed for the yard office to tie the train down. Love the decorative pinwheels on BNSF 1833!

During the end of its active life, DRGW 3011 was relegated to "B-Unit" status. This essentially meant that the unit was not capable of leading a consist and could only be used as a trailing unit. While it certainly needs some work, the classic GP30 cab looks mighty fine from the side. Good to know that one of these will be preserved.

Rio Grande GP30 #3011 spent 32 years on the active roster. It was built in May 1962 and worked until 1994, six years after the DRGW/Espee merger. It is now 52 years old and sits quietly next to the roundhouse at the Colorado Railroad Museum. One day, it'll have its turn at restoration!

At the back of the long hood of GP30 DRGW 3011, we find a fan used as part of the cooling of the prime mover. Although in this case, it has probably been close to 20 years since this fan has been used!
